paying a restaurant bill in Spain

When you request a bill at restraurants in Spain, do the waiters leave the bill on the table first then come back again later to collect the payment like in France or do they just stay there until you finish paying the bill like in Germany?

We found that they generally drop the bill and disappear (sometimes for what seems like hours). And if you are paying by credit card, expect another long absence once they pick that up. Nothing seems to happen quickly in Spanish restaurants. But I don't remember waiters standing and waiting for you us to pay in Germany either.

They leave the bill and return later, just like in U.S.

The correct phrase is: la cuenta, por favor. In Mexico, the common phrase is:
el cheque, por favor.

Cuenta is pronounced: KWEN-tah
Cheque is pronounced: CHEH-kay
