Passport info to rent a vacation villa?

Is an agent required by Italian law to collect passport information on all guests when you rent a vacation villa for one week in Italy?

Yes. The guest has to be registered with the local police via his passport details.

I was trying to find a link but basically all visitors to Italy need to register their presence with the local police...hotels and apartment rental agencies ask for your passports so they can do it for you.

Hopefully someone can provide something more formal but every time I have rented a villa, apartment or hotel room in Italy they have requested passport info from all guests.

Yes,it's the law, but usually it's done when checking in, not when booking. Any hotel, B&B, convent, etc. will ask for your passport at check-in. Some will keep it until the next morning (depends on how long it takes them to get around to doing their paperwork). You will also have to show it at cell phone companies if you are getting an Italian sim card to use in your phone while there. Internet cafes require it too.

Yes, and you have to carry your documents with you at all times.
