I have been researching the Latin Quarter hotels for some time and I am looking for a good location and decent hotel with comfortable bed at a price less than 120E.
I had it narrowed down to Hotel Le Clos Medicis, Abbatial Saint Germain, Hotel Monge and either of the sister hotels California Saint Germain or Moderne Saint Germain. The first one on my list is too expensive and the Hotel Monge just seems a little further south from the Seine and St. Michel than I want to be. I am leaning towards the California Saint Germain as it is a bit cheaper than the Abbatial. Every review on this sight seems to be 2002 or before. Anyone stayed there recently? Or, do you have any input on my other choices? The California seemed to have slightly better reviews on trip advisor than it's sister property although they are very similar and close to one another. I would appreciate any input!

I stayed at the Abbatial Saint Germain but it was on the 5th floor, a triple room. Not huge but good enough for three and had a balcony. The standard doubles seem to be really small.

Not sure about the other hotels on your list. I believe Clos Medicis was well-regarded a few years back. Hotel Monge is not that far from the Seine, about 30 minutes walk or so. It's a very well-regarded hotel.

wtggirl, I'm not sure when you are going but I can recommend a favorite hotel which should work for your budget of 120E for a double. The hotel is the Hotel College de France, http://www.hotel-collegedefrance.com/accueil-us.html.
It is a small hotel so does book up quickly. The location is perfect for walking to Notre Dame and along the Seine, access to the metro and RER lines B&C, lots of nightlife and good restaurants. I have walked throughout Paris based at this hotel. Enjoy your visit. Deborah

The Hotel Eugenie is a nice little hotel in your budget in the heart of the Latin Quarter. It's been years since I stayed there, but it's still reviewed well on Trip Advisor--although apparently you have to like the color pink to enjoy it now.

Thanks so far on the replys. I have heard of the College de Franc and will check it out. But, I am already so torn between my my current hotel choices!! ira, I am looking at double rooms (two of them). I am not too picky about decor, but I am most comfortable in a pottery barn, minimalist style like you see at the
California or the Clos Medici (that is what attracted me) and the comfy down comfortables are a big plus. Thanks for all your comments and please keep them coming. I am still interested in recent feedback on the California!

I stayed in the Moderne St. Germain about four years ago and would not recommend it (except for location). Trip Advisor reviews are mixed as well. Best of luck!

Actually, I appreciate your input. I researched the hotel and I am seriously considering it. It sounds equal to the Hotel Monge, but with the location I favor. I love the area close to the Sorbonne. I will let you know my final decision.

This is just my personal preference, but I don't care for the area around the Abbatial as much as the others (not quite sure where Moderne is). The College de France is a good idea, also.

Given your taste, and I sort of feel the same way, why are you considering the Abbatial? I thought it was decorated in a rather formal old Louis whatever manner, or has it changed?

I am not insisting on a specific decor. I just feel really comfortable in a modern comfortable decor. I am glad you said that about the area though, because I did not really know. I like the area St. Michel, la Huchette (there's a good jazz club there) and it seems the College de france is perfect because it just far enough away to be quiet but very convenient. Christina, the Moderne and California are both where Rue Monge and Rue des Ecoles intersect. That's not far from the Abbatial!

wtggirl, I don't know when you are going but Hotel College de France is not very large, does not have air cond. but I do love it's location and unfortunately it does book up. Yes, it's a short walk to rue de la Huchette but far enough from the madness of the same. Le Pre Vere, an excellent restaurant is across the street. The rooms are on the small side except the top floor has a good size double with a little more charm. Hotel personnel are exceptional. You would have a wonderful stay I am sure. Deborah

For what it's worth, I really liked the location of the Abbatial when I stayed there in Feb. There's a lovely cafe right next door, an interesting market a couple of blocks down Blvd. St. Germain, and you're a block away from the Seine and a gorgeous view of Notre Dame.

We were initially placed in a standard double room which was very plain jane and drab. White-ish walls, Navy blue bedspread, dark wood end tables, and that was it. We politely asked if there was a different room available and the friendly, helpful staff upgraded up to a deluxe room on the fifth floor for three of our four nights (we had to move back down to the dreary room for the last night). The overall decor is definitely old world Louis-the-whatever. I don't know if I'll return to the hotel just because there are so many interesting places to stay in Paris, but as I said we loved the location and the staff was unfailingly helpful.
