Out of Copenhagen
My husband and I are taking a cruise from Copenhagen in early September. We'd like to get there a few days earlier and see a part of Denmark, other than the big city.
Can someone recommend a city or village, perhaps on the coast, where we would get a better feel of Danish life.
My husband has limited walking ability so steep climbs or dangerous footing would be a problem for us.
I thank you, in advance.
Marsha

We loved Arhus, which is a coastal city. It has a walkable city center and a youthful ambiance. The big tourist attraction is Den Gamle By, an open air sort of museum, with original buildings gathered from all over Denmark and reconstructed in one place.
When we went, we did just fine with the walking, though my sister has difficulties with it.
I don't know that you'd get a "better feel of Danish life," but I'm sure you'd enjoy Arhus. You probably would get something of a feel for student life, as there are a zillion students in Arhus.

Hi M,
The Louisian Museum of Modern Art is on the coast.
Roskilde (Viking Ship Museum and the Cathedral) is on a fjord.
Frederiksborg palace in Hillerod is worth a visit, even though it is not on the coast.

If you wish for a quiet get-away not too far away from Copenhagen (max 1 hour drive), I would suggest to visit Tisvilde on the north coast of Zealand. Tisvilde is a small traditional and yet trendy holiday spot.
You can e.g. stay at Helenekilde Hotel (http://www.helenekilde.com/ - this website is apparently only in Danish but at least you can look at the pictures...), which is a beautful old beach hotel with a fabulous view. Mind you, though, that the hotel is located on a hill so access to the beach from the hotel will be difficult for your husband. But you can drive 5 minutes to an accessable beach area.
I hope you will have a wonderful stay in Denmark.
