One week in or around Naples & the Amalfi Coast in June

Hi, my boyfriend and I will be vising Naples & the Amalfi Coast in June for a week and we would like some recommendations on where to go, what to do, where to stay, what to eat, etc...(we're 27 and 29). From what I have read so far, I think it is best to avoid Naples altogether. We enjoy a good meal (we're vegetarian), great scenery and beaches. I think so far Ischia, Capri, Ravello, Amalfi, Pompeii and Vesuvius are on our to do list, but we are no where close to completely informed on what do to and where to go. We're wondering if it would be best to set base somewhere and do only day trips or stay on two different locations (or more) during the week.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks!

Amelie & Richard-

We are headed to that area this June. I have never been there and from the research we have done here-we learned about the Blue Grotto which we plan on doing. We are doing a day trip to Capri, via Ferry that takes about 40 mins to get us there.

There are so many wonderful places to stay in the area-we have decided to find a centerally located hotel in Sorrento!

Good luck and enjoy your trip!

Can't really choose for you, but I can at least offer a sight of some places you may enjoy visiting....

And if a bit of background would help, these are all very good - although, since most are well due for an update, you should crosscheck any times and prices etc quoted!
.
For more about the many places along the Sorrento Peninsula and Amalfi Coast, there's a useful 'Travel Directory' on their official tourism site...
http://www.costiera.it/weben/index.htm
.
The towns and villages around Vesuvius are covered in a 100+ page leaflet "Discovering Vesuvius"...

.
For Pompei and the other archaeological sites nearby, see also the whizzy new official website..
http://www.pompeiviva.it/pv/en/homepv.htm
.
A series of very good leaflets, produced by the Regione of Campania, seem to be available now only from the local B&B operators' website. Some are better than others, and there are overlaps, but the names are more or less self-explanatory...

And especially...

.
And don't dismiss Naples too readily... have a look through the 'Qui Napoli' magazine from the tourism people. Mostly it's in bilingual English/Italian - and a PDF version is available by clicking on the word "download" here....

(Seems stuck on Dec/Jan but they should be back for a new season in April!)
.

I imagine that's probably quite enough for now?

You've got some great advice from Peter there, he put some work into that!

Reading your post, it appears to me that you only need to base in one place. All your "to do's" aren't that far apart. I'd stay in Sorrento for easy access to the Circumvesuviana train line and to the SITA buses that ply up and down the Amalfi coast. If you're hiring a car, then you will be fairly centrally based.

Sorrento will give you a good cross section of hotel choices within a range of budgets. You'll be fine as vegetarians in Italy. There's lots of pasta with vegetarian sauces, equally pizza with suitable toppings. More and more restaurants have vegetarian main course options outside of those.
