One night somewhere between Zurich and Geneva
My husband and I fly into Zurich in mid-April and will spend two nights there. Then we take the train to Geneva and on to Avignon, France. We've left one night free between leaving Zurich Sunday morning and arriving in Avignon late Monday afternoon. Any suggestions where we should stay? Gruyeres looks great but I'm not sure we have enough time. I'd like the town to be small enough that we can leave the train station and walk to our hotel. We'd also enjoy a hike in the vicinity--again, not too far from where we stay. Thoughts?

I walked from the train station to the town in Gruyeres but I was on a day trip and didn't have luggage. There was a bus you could take and it's certainly not very far ( though it is uphill). It's a very small town, you can see everything in a few hours. The castle was quite interesting.
Why did you pick Zurich and Geneva. They are probably the two least interesting towns in Switzerland. Lucerne is close enough to the Zurich airport (about a half hour train ride from the airport) that a lot of people (including me) stay there if flying in/out of Zurich. Lucerne has plenty to do for a couple of days not even counting the lake and the nearby mountains.
Bern is probably the most interesting Swiss city, it's not a small town but the train station is right in the middle of it and the historic center is beautiful.

Hi shsinnott,
I think Gstaad or nearby Saanen would be great; they lie right on the scenic Golden Pass route between Zweisimmen and Montreux. The countryside is green rolling hills. There are hikes you can take in the mountains (from the Wispile lift) or walks from town to town (Saanen to Gstaad is about 40 minutes). You can take a quick trip to Gruyeres (1h or 1h30) to see the village, too.

I'd also suggest you stop your journey the next day for a few hours in Montreux. Put your cases in a luggage locker at the station, go down to the lake, and stroll to Chillon castle, about 45 minutes. Then take the town bus #201 back to the station to continue your trip to Geneva.
Have fun as you plan!

There are just too many (hundreds) possibilities in order to mention them all.
You may have a look at

BTW: there are 7 daily fast train connections between Geneva and Avignon, 1 of them without train change.
Another direct Avignon bound train starts at Basel.
