One night between Venice & Florence

We are travelling by car and have one night between a few nights in Venice and a few in Florence. What city would you recommend?
Thanks.

Bologna... And here's a nice trip report which explains why.

Hi susanab ~ I have read here that Bologna is worth a stop, but we'll see what the experts say...
We just took the train between our Florence & Venice visits. Feel free to click on my name to see our trip report is you are so inclined...
Have fun, I wish I was there now!

Thanks Bean & Tiff. I'll definitely give Bologna some consideration.

Since you'll have a car, I'll make this suggestion:

Instead of another 'city' (Bologna), detour a bit and approach Florence from the east, traveling through the lovely countryside known as The Casentino. Michelangelo came from this area. Spend that one night at a rural inn and stop at the La Verna monastery (St Francis), the hill town of Poppi, etc.

IMO, this'd be a welcome interlude between the two urban attractions you'll be visiting.

Tuck, Your suggestion sounds very appealing. We will be visiting a lot of cities, so a country relief might be welcome at that point. The area of The Casentino is new to me, so I'll need to do some research.

Thanks.
