One full day in Helsinki, where to stay and what to do?

The title pretty much sums it up......;-)

We are flying in after spending Christmas in the Uk and will then go up to Ivalo (Korpikartano actually) for 4 nights to hopefully find the Northern Lights, then back to Helsinki to catch the train to Moscow, then home.

We will only have one full day, so I'd love suggestions on what to do and somewhere 'fun' to dine.

And also if you have any special central hotel that you'd like to recommend.

Thanks as always.

We spent a day in Helsinki a few years ago. Spent some time exploring the central square (with markets) and took the HOHO bus to see the main sites - they were quite spread out,so we were glad we hadn't tried to travel around independently with public transport.
Main memorable places were the underground church, park with Sibelius pipes, a drive past the old Olympics grounds (mainly because we knew an Aussie cyclist who'd won a medal there.

It was a freezing cold day in mid-summer, so we visited a great cafe on that main square a couple of times to thaw out!

Hi,
HoHo busses does not operate in Helsinki during winter time.
Christmas is very nice time in Helsinki.
You can take a look here for some inspiration: http://www.visitfinland.com/article/...istmas-city-2/

Remember that in December the days will be short. Sun rises late and goes down early. Plan any outside sightseeing for the few hours when you can actually see anything.
