One Day in London

We have only 2 nights and one day on our own in London. Any recommendations on housing (on a Sunday and a Monday night) so we can see a few interesting things on Monday, and make it in reasonable time to Heathrow? Thanks.

Consider staying in Bloomsbury (Russell Sq. area), there are several nice places to stay that are reasonable, THE CELTIC, ST. MARGaRITES (sp), THE LONSDALE, if you want to spend more the PRESIDENT.
This is a really handy location, the BRITISH MUSEUM is in the neighborhood and across the street is a nice (but very busy) little pub called THE MUSEUM TAVERN, who's clients at one time included Karl Marx, Chas. Dickens, and more.
The Russell Sq. tube station is central to everthing and it's a reasonably quick trip to the Tower, which is always cool to see. The Museum might be a bit much for one day. You are within (long) walking distance from Covent Garden and the Theatre District. Consider taking in a matinee. Whatever you do, you'll want more so start planning your next trip. London is wonderful and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I have. Bon Voyage.

If you only have one day in London, do a guided tour of Westminster Abbey: "900 years of English History in 90 minutes." We were fortunate to have Benjamin as our guide, and he was wonderful -- knowledgeable and funny. We don't usually go for the guided tours, preferring to poke about on our own, but this was an extraordinary experience, and it takes you into parts of the cathedral that are not otherwise accessible.

I don't recommend the Tower of London since your time there is so short -- you'll spend too much time standing in line, only to be rushed past the crown jewels. Save it for when you have more time.

THE SUGGESTION TO SEE WESTMINSTER ABBEY BY THE GUIDED TOUR IS AN EXCELLENT ONE. IT TAKES ABOUT1-1/2 HOURS AND PROVIDES ACCESS TO THE TOMBS(TOPPED BY EFIGIES) OF QUEEN ELIZABETH I AND MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS AMONG OTHERS. IF YOU HAVE THE TIME, WALK FROM THE ABBEY UP TO BUCKINGHAM PALACE. IT IS A NICE WALK AND WILL ENABLE YOU TO SEE THE PALACE, THE MALL AND ST. JAMES PARK. BUY A MAP OF LONDON BEFORE YOU GO.

Since you're short on time, take one of those double decker bus tours of London -- I know it may sound a little corny, but they really show you all the major sites and give little bits of info on each. I suggest you do it first thing in the morning that way you can go back to see those sites that really interested you. You can hop on one of these tours at several locations, but I believe one of the main starting points is Trafalgar Square. If you're looking for some good shopping locations - talk a stroll on Regent St. (like NYC's 5th Ave.) and check our Carnaby St. Also Convent Garden is a great spot for shopping and restaurants.
Have a great time!
