Noway Bergen return 10 day fjords trip

What does everyone think of this itinerary? Any input would be great!

We will be travelling from the 11th of August until the 21st. We will have a car and there will be 4 adults in total.

11/08 Monday- arrive in Bergen 5pm

12/08 Tuesday- Stay in Tyssedal (Hardangerfjord region)
• Explore Bergen in the morning
• Drive about 2 hours to Sunndal area, then onto Odda and Tyssedal
• All up probably close to 3 hours driving (? plus ferries)

13/08 Wednesday- Trolltunga or Tyssedal (Hardangerfjord region)
• Hike Trolltunga - 8 hours hike round trip (22km)
• Will camp up on the hike or do it in a day and then stay in Tyssedal again

14/08 Thursday- Aurland (Sognefjord region) (or could stay in Flam)
• Stop at Vøringsfossen (waterfall) on the way (1 hour 20 min from Tyssedal)
• Visit the famous Kjeåsen - a small farm far up in the mountain (30 mins from Vøringsfossen)
• Stop in Flam and see the famous Flam railway
• Aurland is 2 hours drive from Kjeasen (I think including a ferry)
• So about 4 hours driving all up that day

15/08 Friday- Aurland (Sognefjord region)
• Explore Aurland region, lots to do
• Visit Gudvangen and the White Caves (20 mins from Aurland)
• Visit the Nærøyvalley - popular viewpoint at Stalheim, overlooking Nærøy canyon
• Visit stegastein viewpoint (more walking trails from here) → Kjosfossen Waterfall
• Could take a cruise from Flam to Balestrand and visit famous Kvikne’s Hotel
• Can go kayaking up the fjord from Aurland

16/08 Saturday- Memurubu (Jotunheimen National Park)
• From Aurland, drive 3 hours to Gjendesheim
• From Gjendesheim take the boat to Gjendebu and walk the Bukkelægeret to Memurubu Lodge, then stay the night

17/08 Sunday- Memurubu (Jotunheimen National Park)
• Wake up early and hike the Besseggen Ridge (famous hike)- 8ish hour hike all up
• Stay the night again in Memurubu

18/08 Monday – Geiranger (Geirangerfjord region)
• Catch boat back over to Gjendesheim to car
• Drive 2 hours 30 mins to Geiranger
• Drive to Dalsnibba Observation Point for a spectacular view of the Geiranger Fjord
• Visit Bridal Veil and Seven Sisters waterfalls

19/08 Tuesday – Geiranger (Geirangerfjord region)
• Stay another night, lots to do in this area
• Could take a cruise up the Geirangerfjord from Geiranger to Hellesylt

20/08 Wednesday- Bergen
• Drive 4 hours (or so) to Vikøyri - Hopperstad Stave Church
• Could stop in Balestrand on the way, or could stop in Nearby Fjærland and the glacier of Bøyabreen
• Drive another 2 hours 20 mins back to Bergen. Could also stop in Voss on the way

21/08- Fly out of Bergen at 1pm

As you can see we love the outdoors and hiking. We plan to use a combination of hostels and camping on the trip. Does anyone have any advice about camping in Norway?

The Flam railway is a scenic rail trip. If you are not planning on taking the railway trip, then there is nothing to see by going to Flam and seeing a railway station.

Kvikne's Hotel is an old hotel on the water front. I don't think I would take a ferry ride just to see the hotel unless you plan on staying in the area.

We hiked the Besseggen last year. Really beautiful. Which direction are you hiking it? You need to time the boats.

We thought of trying Trolltunga but the more I read 8 hours sounded extremely optimistic. So we had to skip it as time was short. It turned out well as the day we drove by it there was a driving rainstorm. Be prepared for camping in bad weather. In fact Besseggen ended with a pretty good rainstorm as well.

Sounds like a great trip.

Thanks colduphere. We were looking at hiking Besseggen from Memurubu Lodge and return in one day, so would only be catching the boats the day before and the day after. Do you think that is a good plan?

Hello Reneec - I apologize if you know all this. What I am saying is that if you hike from Memurubu to Gjendesheim (which is what most people do) you have to take a boat back to Memurubu at the end of the hike if you are staying the night at Memurubu. The Besseggen hike is a straight line - it is not a circle. You don't finish where you started. So you have to finish the hike in time to meet the last ferry back to Memurubu. I think the last ferry is at 4 pm. Here is a ferry schedule that is a little hard to understand:

If you are planning on hiking to Gjendesheim and then all the way back to Memurubu - never heard of anyone doing that - that would be a very difficult day, especially if it is raining. Or perhaps you are hiking half way and then turning around? Anyway, I am sure it will work out.

oh I understand what you mean colduphere. Do you think that is a good plan to hike from Memurubu to Gjendesheim, catch the ferry back and then depart the next day?

I think that is an ideal plan as long as you start early enough. Bring a good camera. The landscape is beautiful.

Reneec I hope you can report back on the hike from Gjendebu to Memurubu. We didn't have time to do that section. Which was probably a good thing as one part of the trail looked very steep. As I remember there were chains to help you through that area. I would love to know what you thought of it. Thanks.

You see the waterfalls best from Geiranger fjord. If you take the ferry to Hellesylt, you'll pass them.
