Northeast (Dolomites) versus Northwest (Cinque Terre) ?
We are in early planning of a 2005 trip to Northern Italy and Switzerland. We think we can plan a route to include either Cinque Terre & Pisa in the west, or the Dolomites in the east. We love mountains AND love coastal scenery, and are having trouble deciding. Can anyone voice a preference?

Some questions to be answered first- what time of year? Where in Switzerland are you going? If you are going to see the Alps then the CT would be a nice change- beautiful seaside towns. If you include Interlaken and Lucerne in your trip you will get a lot of lake and mountain views so for a change of pace I would include the CT. Its gorgeous. I've been to Switzerland, CT, and Bolzano(Dolomites) and they are all beautiful. Enjoy

Depending on where you are going you can have a real dose of those "mountains" particularly in Switzerland if you journey to the areas that have the highest peaks such as near Interlaken or farhtre south in Canto Valais (Zermatt).
The Dolomites are very secnic but IMO they are not as scenic as the Swiss Alps. I think I'd stick with the Italian West Coast if you'd like contrasts regardless of the time of year.

In early Summer 2003, I took a bried trip to the Italian Dolomites from Milan (Valdora, San Candido, Brunico, Cortina d'Ampezzo, Bressanone). It was a wonderful trip and I would higly recommend it. Here are links to my photos and, it you send me a note to [email protected], I will send you my trip report.

Thanks to all for the responses.
Bob, we're going mid-June. We'd certainly be driving if we go to the Dolomites, probably be going by rail if we elect the Cinque Terre option. We'll also be going to the Jungfrau, and Glacier Expressing between there and the Engadine. We have two weeks.
