Nice, France & Provence

Our GCT tour ends in Nice and we are staying 3 more days to see the area.
Previous forums suggest Nice is fun to explore... where would we stay and what should we see?
We live to get out to Provence and see some of it for 2 nights..... again, where would we stay and best way to get in and out of Nice? We are day people and like riding bikes, walking, and sampling the local cafes. Hightened concern for safety these days.

Three days total for Nice and Provence? If so, stick to Nice and do a day trip -go Antibes or Cap Ferrat, St-Paul de Vence.
Nice has a lot to see itself. Chagall Museum, Matisse Museum. Old Town. Promenade des Anglais and more.

Sounds like you need a guidebook. Or two.

Click on my name for my Nice to Paris TR with several things to see in and around Nice.

Was based in Nice this summer for 3 nights and then Privence for 3 nights. I think there's enough to do around Nice and the coadt to stay there. What's your hotel budget? Lots of different options...

Nice is in Provence. With only 3 days you'll be hard-pressed to visit much more than Nice and a couple of coastal or inland towns. Agree you need a guidebook or two and a map. Public transportation along the coast is regular and reliable. To go inland you'd best have a car.

Ha! Thank you all but esp. Thursdaysd. I have just spent a delightful evening traveling France with Google open in another tab to look up things I was not familiar with... what an adventure. Yes I do have tour books - 6 of them - nothing as fun as this, by the way, my first time on a forum.
Nice sounds lovely but would still like get in a visit to the Canal Du Midi and Aix.... even if just for walk-around, a cup of coffee and a galette...

You're welcome, and welcome to Fodors.

Nice to Aix is three hours on the train, and you still have to get from the TGV station to the center. See seat61.com for train info. According to viamichelin it's 100 mostly motorway miles and two hours by car. Have to say, I preferred Nice to Aix.

The Canal du Midi is an awfully long way to travel to see...a canal. And galette's are a specialty of Bretagne, not the southwest of France, though of course you can find them. Nice is far more interesting, IMO, than Aix, and certainly way more interesting than...a canal.
