Nice, Eze or St. Paul de Vence for base for last 3 nights?
Bonjour,
I have been trying to decide where to stay the last 3 nights that we are in france (we are flying out of Nice). Which of these cities in your opinion would be most ideal to stay for 3 nights. We will do day trips, I imagine, from whichever we choose.
Thanks for your opinions,
Suzanna

Dear Suzanne;
I absolutely love Saint Paul de Vence; it is a little out of the way however but so worth it.
Nice would probably be the most centeral and convient; but not as charming or romantic.
Viva ls France
to the top for Suzanne
Sherri

If you are going to have a car in the Nice area for sightseeing, I wouldn't suggest basing directly in Nice - a large city with heavy traffic.

I'd recommend staying in Villefranche, slightly to the east of Nice. The Hotel Welcome, overlooking the harbor, is a lovely, fairly reasonable place to stay, and has good parking at a public lot almost across the street. From there you can drive easily to Eze, St. Paul de Vence (try to make reservations for a meal at Columbe D'Or, and many of the other Cote d'Azure towns. There is also a train station within walking distance of the hotel, so you can just park your car and take the train into Nice and avoid the traffic. You can also drive or take the train to Monoco.

Villefranche is also an easy drive to the Nice Airport

Susanna: I was the one who asked the follow-up question about your trip details. Although we stayed in Nice for an entire week and successfully (and quite easily) used rail and bus lines to do much of the Cote d'Azur, I always looked longingly at Villefranche sur Mer as we passed it and later as we explored it. Since that time, I've been recommending Villefranche because it's a 7 minute hop to Nice on the train (so you can take advantage of all the connections from Nice and all the services of a major city) yet has a relaxed and charming atmosphere of its own. Eze is a spit away. In fact, we loved our hike up to Eze from the station Eze sur Mer. Gorgeous views.

However, as an alternative, you might also want to consider Antibes as your final base. I wouldn't want you to miss St. Paul de Vence, and Antibes would be a charming base to allow you to easily fit St. Paul de Vence into your plans (you could include the Cap, Cannes, Vence, St. Paul de Vence, Haut Cagnes sur Mer, Mougins in your itinerary from there).

Again, both places allow you to park the car and use the rail, and yet both would allow nice road access, too. Another consideration if you're using either town as a base is to get rid of the car in Avignon, take the rail to either city, and then all you have to do the last day is take a cab to the airport. St. Paul de Vence has no rail line, but it is easily reached by bus from both towns.

Traffic flow around the Nice airport is excellent. Good place to get in and out of.
