Ngaio Marsh and Beilstein

Have you ever stayed at Hotel Haus Lipmann in Beilstein? It is a lovely place with outside tables where you can eat your meals or have a glass of wine.

I am reading a biography of the great mystery writer, Ngaio Marsh.

The section I'm reading now tells of how , in about 1938, she and her friend stayed at Beilstein at the house of the Lippmans while her friend recovered from pleurisy. During this time she worked on "Death in a White Tie."

It was a nice surprise to see the mention of a hotel and a town I enjoyed so much, but it was Marsh and her friend were staying at the Lippmans' house that the Nazis entered the village and began a persecution of the Jews of Beilstein.

Kia ora Peg
That is so interesting. My father was related to Ngaio somehow and this will prompt me to ask my uncle about the connection.
Beilstein is on my bucket list for when I get to Europe. Something about the Moselle with the old buildings and castles really appeals to me. I will go to the Hotel Haus Lippman when I am there.

We really enjoyed our time there. Our room was on the third floor, but when the owners saw that I was using a cane, they moved us to the second floor where there weren't so many steps.

We were talking to the chambermaid, who asked us where we were from. We said, "Washington state." She responded, "The Evergreen State," which is the state motto. It turns out that she lived in Seattle, where she worked as an apprentice carpenter.

I don't know if you've been to Burg Eltz, which is not far from Hotel Haus Lippman. It's a wonderful castle. Rick Steves says it's his favorite, and it's mine too.

My nephew's wife is named Ngaire. Her father is from New Zealand, as was Ngaio Marsh.

Yes I am from New Zealand as well. My father's family are from Christchurch and I think the connection was with his mother.
The hotel looks awesome especially the garden. I will go there when I am in Germany.
I dream of going to Burg Eltz as well. It's on the list as well.
Ngaire is a Maori girl's name which is relatively common here. Ngaio is more unusual.
Small world isn't it!

Yes, I have stayed at the hotel. A lovely place to stay, even during a wet weekend in October, just before they closed for the winter.
As a big Ngaio Marsh fan I was interested to read of her link to the hotel.
Thanks Peg.
