New Years Resolutions & Travel

It is not long now until the New Year begins!
As with all New Years, those ole Resolutions pop up.
One asks oneself, should I even bother to make one? Do I need this kind of pressure? What kind of resolution can I keep?
What do I want most, besides World Peace?
So my questions to you is,
What is your New Years Resolution going to be, IF, it concerns Travel?
I will go first .... we are planning a trip.
It started out big and is getting smaller, but that is OK.
Travel is good, regardless of how far you go or how often.
So my New Years Resolution is, to go away as often as I can, see as much as I can that is new to me, and to see if I can learn something from it, enrich my life through it and share it with my friends and family.

Now, it is your turn~
Scarlett

My/Our Travel Resolutions for 2005 are:

1. Venice/Rome during Easter (solo trip).

2. Hawaii in late May with my wife.

3. Ireland in September with my loving wife of 35 years next June.

I guess I'd better start working to pay for these trips!!! Mike

Hi Scarlett, well at this point here are the possibilities.

Hawaii in April. Italy in June. And somewhere in between Santa Barbara and Portland OR (one of your favorite cities).

But right now need to unpack from this last week.

Oh dear Scarlett! I think 2005 is going to be a fly-by-the-seat-of-our-pants kind of year in regard to travel. What I resolve to do is get myself back to France in the autumn with my husband, but that depends on where our eldest goes off to college...don't know how much disposable income we'll have this September, I'm afraid. Here's hoping for in-state tuition!

I will stay with the usual New Year's Travel Resolution, and that is to travel my butt off, and to heck with whining about the weak dollar.

Here are my upcoming plans:

1. Paris in January w/Dad and stepmom

2. UK in late May/early June w/DH

3. Any other travel opportunity that comes my way....

It is also my usual resolution to take a great interest in my friends' travel plans. It doesn't matter if they are going around the world or just 50 miles away. I am excited that they are traveling and doing something they are excited about.

Happy Travels in 2005 to all my Fodorite pals!!

No New Year's resolution here. Just a belated Christmas wish to Jesus in California -
that this thread would quietly slip away without getting the same lame resolutions year-after-year from the same posters.

I like the fly-by-the-seat-of-the-pants approach. I don't have any firm travel plans, but my resolutions are as follows:

1. Accompany firstborn to settle in at U-Cal Berkeley in August and spend a few days there touring and visting with friends in the SF area.

2. Take advantage of two free weeks I've got coming my way in a friend's place in Umbria.

3. With luck, a tour or two in the Dordogne and Provence (the weak dollar is surely making the tour business iffy), but if not, a good two weeks minimum in St-Cirq to smell the roses and catch up on local gossip.

4. A bunch of small trips to NJ, PA, maybe FL, and elsewhere to watch lacrosse tournaments.

5. It's not a resolution, but I'm casting my travel net a bit wider these days, with the weak dollar, and if I spy something fabulous in Belize or Mexico or North Africa or Turkey or......I've been known to book a flight one day and pack the next.

6. This is a definite resolution - take better advantage of the myriad offerings of the DC area. Buy the Friday Post every week and scour the Weekend section. It's amazing how many things are going on here in DC that I would love to attend but that I miss (because I'm on Fodor's maybe?). I've signed up for the French, Italian, and Austrian Embassy newsletters or notices of free events and plan to take greater advantage of them in 2005 than ever before.

Hiking the Inca trail to Macchu Picchu in May...yeeeah..
Trip to Grand Canyon (hike the trail down) sometime in Oct/Nov.
everything else seat of the pants depending on projects, vacation time and all that mundane stuff.

Is it my imagination, or are the troll personalities multiplying faster than rabbits here!

My travel resolutions:
To keep on going to France until I get sick of it. (If ever!)

To keep an open mind to explore other destinations as well. Maybe Alaska in July?

No, marcy_, given your ground-breaking, leading-edge New Year's resolution, you don't have enough imagination to actually know that I'm a brand new fully-registered member here.

Groan, I do wish someone would work on getting some sort of life for themselves and stop concentrating so much on mine... My husband thinks I am fascinating, but then, he loves me. You, Troll, whoever you are, must have someone that you actually know that you can follow around like a love starved puppy and beg for attention? Is there no one in your little dark world that can give you a smile and acknowledge you?
Obviously, you are an old poster with a grudge, but whatever, it is not of any interest to me, nor are you. I find your obsessive following and posting after me sort of interesting in a weird way, usually men that I meet behave that way LOL but rarely anyone calling themselves Nelly.
But whatever makes you happy, dear, you just go ahead and get your kicks, and we will go ahead and do what we have been doing long before you took your turn for the worse.

<<That would might be a resolution worth announcing on a public forum. >>

If this example of shattered English is intended to suggest that Fodorites might better spend their money on charitable pursuits than on travel, let me be the first to say that I have never gone a year without giving scads of donations to Goodwill, the Purple Heart, the Salvation Army, and other such organizations. At Christmas each year my family locates a family in need and organizes an entire Christmas package to donate to, usually some young mother with children who would not otherwise be able to celebrate Christmas. My kids do community service year-round. I volunteer for various organizations. I contribute monetarily to others. WHAT are you saying?
My guess as a frequent contributor to this forum for several years and as an I hope somewhat astute judge of "character," is that many regular Fodorites have the income and the goodness to be contributors to charities of various sorts.
Send someone to Europe? Well, there's a disingenuous concept! I'd rather make sure someone has good food and a secure home before I embark on sending poor people abroad. Travel to Europe is, in context, extraneous when basic life necessities aren't available. Call that elitist or whatever, but that's my position. If there were a charity where one could contribute to sending kids to Europe, I'd probably do it, but frankly I'd rather make sure people are safe and well fed and can pay their electricity bills. Sending poor kids to Europe is not exactly a priority. Making sure that they are healthy and well-educated is. What have you done to further those basic goals, Nellyanne spelled backwards?

My travel plans for the year include:

....weekly trips to the local dump (we believe in personal responsibilty here) you make it-you dispose of it.

....weekly trips to the local "mall" also known as a section of the dump where others display re-usable items free for the taking.

....trips to our local cuboard - to get the poor dog a bone.

....a trip to the moon - because that's all Ralph ever offers!

By the by -- speaking of multiple personalities -- has anyone ever noticed how many of you fodorites have the same partner? DH? Don't you think you should get together and compare notes and stop this scam? Or are you all in cohoots with this multiple?

Scarlett you come across here on Fodors as a secure happy well adjusted and well to do lady. I can't understand why you acknowlege the poster with many names who taunts you. I have learned many things about travel here and I am saddened that this person ruins some threads.

Some of the regulars here had fun with me in the past and I enjoyed writing here about my travel plans. As of this writing they have changed and I am going to France and Italy with just one friend now - we have left the partiers to their own trip.

My resolution is to visit as many Christian churches in Europe as I have time for and I intend to pray at every one I visit. I am so grateful for the earlier Christians and I want to pay homage to them. It is my beloved religion and I think everyone should visit their own religion's sites.

Thank you for asking.

watchmaker, very funny. Mine is the Yankee although he prefers H.

This is a travel forum, as we (I) often hear reminders to the fact. In no way do any of us have the right to question where our money comes from or where we spend it.
Nor do we ever have any need to explain our charitable givings on here.
