new years eve in london?

I will be in London from Christmas through New Years. I am looking for good restaurants and/or night clubs to spend some evenings. I am also looking for a great place to ring in the new year. Thanks for your input.

Lucky you. London is great at that time of year. I spent New Year 1997 at trafalgar Square and that was a wonderful experience.

The Blue Elephant in Fulham is one of my favourite restaurants if you like Thai food.

Jennifer-

Big Ben at midnight on New Year's Eve is my favourite! Be sure to dress warmly as the wind off the Thames can be chilly!

As for restaurants, where do I begin? Rules close to Covent Garden is supposedly the oldest restaurant in London, has a great menu and some very good traditional food. The Mezzo in Soho is one of Terrance Conran's huge trendy restaurants with live music - you will need a reservation. But my current favourite is a 'modern British' restaurant called Sonny's on Church Street in Barnes (southwest London). Great food, well thought out winelist and nice but quirky waiters.

Enjoy your trip!

Hi Jennifer,

I'm a 'Londoner' and I'll share one of my fave restaurants with you but keep it a secret! There is a great place called 'The Chop House' which is at Butlers Wharf right next to Tower Bridge. I've actually sat outside of this restaurant next to the river during a late August electrical storm - the view, with Tower Bridge in the background was so fantastic we stayed outside (under a canapy) even though the waiters wouldn't come outside to bring our deserts!! Of course, there is seating inside too! The food is exquisite. Quite expensive if you eat in the main restaurant - I usually opt for the brasserie menu which is also superb food (and I am v. fussy!) at great value. The set menu, three courses is about 10 UKP.
Hope you have a great time and don't forget to bring warm clothes!

Lorraine
