Need help with Venice hotel!

I am still trying to get all my ducks in a row for a Nov trip to Italy with my 10 year old daughter. We want to spend 2 nights in Venice and would like to find a nice hotel close to a vaporetto stop. Preferably a stop easy to find, like on the Grand Canal or whatever. I have never been there but I know I don't want to spend 1/2 a day trying to find my hotel. Thanks, April

April---
You didn't say what price range or how "deluxe" you want your hotel to be, but here are a couple of choices I'm familiar with:
In the super deluxe range, the Danieli, right on the Grand Canal.
In the slightly lower (but still rather expensive range) the Metropole, just down from the Danieli and also on the Grand Canal.
In a more moderate range, and one that has received a lot of good recommendations, is the Hotel Ala, not on the water but they do have a private dock that a water taxi can take you to.
On the water and even a bit lower in price is La Calcina, which is nice and generally gets booked up pretty fast.
Finally, right behind the Savoia & Jolanda, and a nice little hotel at a very reasonable price, is the Hotel Campiello, a stone's throw from the Grand Canal. If you like any of these, I'll give you contact info.

Commercio & Pellegrino is next to the Danieli, a stone's throw from the San Zaccaria stop, 5 minutes (or less) to San Marco, and I highly recommend it:

http://www.commercioepellegrino.com/

Locando Leon Bianco is inexpensive (as Venice goes) lovely and charming. It's very close to the Ca’ d’Oro stop in Cannaregio.

I stayed at the Graspo de Ua, which is a stone's throw from the Rialto stop on the Grand Canal, next to the Rialto Bridge--the essence of Venice. It's a 3 star hotel, with tiny rooms (Very common for Venice) unless you bring Fort Knox to pay for a room with space. So, for the prices in Venice, the hotel gave me a real bargain for it's location, which can't be beat. You can take the Vaporetti all over, or just walk, as it is pretty central. You might hear that the Rialto is "too" touristy. Let me tell you that ALL of Venice is too touristy, so don't let the too touristy image of the Rialto area scare you away. When I'm lucky enough to go to Venice again, I'll gladly go back to the Graspo De Ua. Also, the hotel staff was extremely friendly and would walk us to restaurants so we wouldn't get lost. In fact I stayed in NOV of 2001, and I booked directly with them via e-mail and got a better super deal for asking, much better than any of those so-called "cheap" hotel websites with hot-air prices of 75% off. Never've seen it, and don't believe it. Try the hotel first, website is http://graspodeua.hotelinvenice.com/main_en.htm

Ron

April
I am a fan of the hotel Flora, less than a 5 minute walk from San Marco, yet on a quiet alley. Rooms are smallish, but the hotel has full-services, friendly staff, etc.
A little more expensive and with larger rooms is the Colombina,, 5-7 minute walk from the other side of San Marco. I haven't stayed there but I inspected it last fall. Pretty decor, light and airy rooms, quiet, some rooms over look a small canal. Just a few minutes' walk from San Zaccaria vaporetto stop, a major stop, or just a few more minutes' walk from San Marco stop. I will probably stay there myself in the future. Both hotels serve breakfast in the morning. The Flora books up months in advance.
I have a long file on Venice; if you'd like to see it, email me.

Hotel Locondia Sturion is quite nice, right on canal and close to all. Good rooms, good breakfast, only down side is long flight of stairs to reach the hotel lobby and rooms. They have web site if you search for them.

Our family stayed at the Giorgione (sp??) near the Ca'D'oro vaparetto stop (maybe a five minute walk) - a four star hotel rated, but more like a top 3 star in price and accomodations. We had two rooms - one big (for Italy) and one small, but staff was great and neighborhood was great - close enough to get everywhere but far from the maddening crowd. We actually spent more time around the neighborhood and walking around and enjoying what it feels like to live in Venice rather than visit it.

I agree with Sandi on the Locanda Leon Bianco. We stayed there over Christmas, and would most definitely go back. The proprietors are friendly and helpful, the views of the Grand Canal from room 4 are stunning, and you get to have breakfast in your room. Our room was 280,000 lire per night. Those without a Grand Canal view were cheaper. It's in a good location, and you can walk to the Ca d'Oro vaporetto stop in two minutes. St. Mark's Square is about a fifteen minute walk. I highly recommend this hotel.

Stay at the Splendid Suisse....exit vaporetto at Rialto Bridge and it's a short walk from there....or have a taxi take You directly to the hotel....I think it's a 4**** hotel...nice for sure between Rialto & St. Mark's Square
