There's a famous museum in Mulhouse I'd love to visit.
Google Map states a 5 hour journey by car.
I'd rather not rent a car.
Is it possible to shrink the travel time by using bus or train?

Yes, it's almost always better and faster to take the train from city to city than travel by car. The trip is just over 3 hours by train. There are no inter-city buses in France. You can find the schedules and prices on www.tgv-europe.com and make sure you choose UK as your country, not the US.

So you can print out e-tickets and not be switched to the American site. I use the voyages-sncf web site but don't think it has an Enlgish version.

At a glance it looks like there are trains almost hourly and they all take just over 3-3 1/2 hours by train. If you plan ahead by just under 90 days you can purchase a PREMs ticket for 22 euros each way.

I'm not dissing the car museum in Mulhouse, it's a gem, but if you want to visit an excellent car museum closer to Paris, there's Autoworld in Brussels, only 90 minutes from Paris by Thalys.
