Need a Charming Hotel in London
Although I pride myself in finding charming, reasonable hotels/pensions/B&Bs all over Europe, London seems to have very few of these types of hotels. We stayed at the London Elizabeth in Bayswater last trip, and although it's very charming, I'd love to hear recommendations for other hotels in the Bayswater, Paddington, Notting Hill area.

London doesn't do "charming at a reasonable price" very well. It often ends up tatty, dirty or (at best) chintzy. That said, you might try doing some research via Sandra Gustafson's book, Cheap Sleeps in London (title in new edition might have changed to "Great Sleeps"
. She has investigated carefully a lot of hotels and provides very detailed (sometimes room-by-room) descriptions of various hotels.

Harrington Hall Hotel is very nice. I found it quite charming.
Look on their own website - www.harringtonhall.co.uk to check it out then look on other websites for cheaper deals if youre interested.

There's a charming hotel I love, The Academy ,and though it's not on the very cheap side and not in the zones you mentioned, it's in Bloomsbury, you could take a look at.
It's lovely and sometimes has good deals, depending on the dates you want. The website is www.theetoncollection.com.

I used to stay at the Academy a lot. When I'd decide to stay overnight in London at the last minute I could always show up there and get a room. Dismal, minuscule, convenient -- and 10 gbp a night. Lukewarm shower trickled from a mystifying thermal heater box. Friendly staff. Those were the days.
I had heard it had been turned into quite a nice hotel. I always liked looking out onto the gilded rats and mosquitos of the institute of tropical medicine opposite.
Although it's a little longer walk to the Tube than some hotels, I would give it a thumbs up, unless you want a really quiet backwater. It's an area with a lot of students, so there are a lot of restaurants and shops and pleasant activity. And there are buses and taxis, of course. And walkable to a surprising number of things. Get out your map.
I vastly prefer the area to Bayswater or Paddington, and it's probably cheaper than Notting Hill.
