Most Romantic Alpine Lake in Tirol/Bavaria Region?

On our 2nd Honeymoon, we would like to take a boat ride around a beautiful, scenic and quiet alpine lake in the midst of the stunning Alps. The problem is: WHICH ONE?? They all sound so wonderful! Which lake would you suggest and why. We will be there in September. The cities we will be visiting will be Munich, Fuessen, Innsbruck, Hallstadt, Salzburg and Berchtesgarten. Also, any lodging recommendations for a "home base" site in any of these areas? By the way, we will have a car. Thanks in advance for all your recommendations!

Boy I wish I had your dilemma!

My choice would be Chiemsee. Beautiful and serene (definite romance potential). You could catch a lake steamer on Prien and get to one of the two islands. I preferred Herrenchiemsee because of the amazing castle (Ludwig II was obsessed with Louis XIV and this castle was to have been a replica of Versailles). Beautiful gardens.

Malia, That is easy---you have to go to
St.Gilgen on the Wolfgangsee as your
base camp and take the boat around all
of that lake and then day trip to
Hallstatt from here for another great
experience. You can also do Salzburg
from the same location. Also, the Eibsee
lake above Garmisch is very nice and at
the foot of the Zugspitz. You will love
the Austrian Lakes.

Hello from Vienna!
I like the Tegernsee (south of Munich) or the Kochelsee. I'm born in Munich so I know all the lakes around very well.
Very romantic are Traunsee and Attersee in Upper Austria too.
Tegernsee has a lot of good hotels and guesthouses and very good restaurants.
If you need more information please let me know.
Silvia

I live in that area. I would choose the Königssee in Bavaria.

Hi, I agree with David, about the Konigssee in Bavaria. The scenery was truly breathtaking, but since we only drove by the lake I didn't know if they had ferries or accomodations on the Lake. We did love Wolfgangsee and our stay there which does have a boat ride around the lake. You can get on and off wherever you like and the scenery is beautiful.
