Mid-October in Bernese Oberland

Help! I need help planning my 10 day stay in Switzerland. Originally, I wanted to stay one night in Luzern. Next wanted to go to Montreux and enjoy Lake Geneva for 3 nights then 4 nights in the Bernese Oberland then the rest in Zurich. I am wondering if that is too long in the mountains because of the weather. I will be there mid Oct. Any suggestions? Thanks!

No guarantees on the weather in October in the Oberland. Many, many beautiful days. Many ugly days. Ugly is fine, except when it's completely overcast shutting off the view to or from the mountaintops. Some lifts may be closed down, though most will not be. (Allmendhubel for sure closed, possibly Schynige Platte depending on snow ... likely.) <BR> <BR>I've known many to have a fine visit. But at the least you want to have alternate plans, as well as a sense of humor. <BR> <BR>Some idea of the weather during offseason visits to this area in the articles at: <BR>www.twenj.com/swmurrenfall.htm and <BR>www.twenj.com/swisswhen.htm

Thanks Ed. I am thinking of leaving that part of my trip open. ie no reservations and fly by the seat of my pants! I am hoping that late in the season I won't have trouble finding a room.

Many hotels will be closed in between seasons, but you should have no problem finding a room. <BR> <BR>As a suggestion, there's nothing wrong with booking in advance, and canceling or changing as soon as you know you'll be changing your plans. In any event do plan what your choice and alternates would be and check to make sure that they're operating at that time. Open/close dates are shown on the www.swisshotels.ch site.

Thanks Ed! I don't want to get caught up in a guaranteed reservation for 4 nights if the weather is bad. I would like to pull out and go somewhere else. I have found plenty open so I was thinking of just calling from the train station when I get there.
