It depends on your departure time. Some departures require 4-5 changes, some only one, like the 13:46 and 17:46 trains.
You can look at the options at the German railways site. After entering your travel data, the itineraries will appear; click on the arrow at the left of each itinerary to see where you'll be changing at what time. Prices start at around 39€ for advance-sale tickets:

You might want to double check on the SwissRail site which shows every timing as having at least 2 connections

Thanks! I am looking to spend a few days in Europe after our trip to Munich and Memmingen. We have already been to Austria and Prague. I thought Zurich/Lucerne would be a nice place to see. Any other suggestions?

For a few days in Switzerland yes Lucerne is sweet - lots of things to hop to around lovely Lake Lucerne - Zurich is another big city - nice but not the reason many folks come to Switzerland for - to see the picture of Switzerland etched in many minds' eyes - glacier-girdled Alpine peaks, tiny toylike trains, thrilling aerial cable ways - etc stuff that lies all over the Jungfrau Region in and around Interlaken - with such lovely mountain towns to stay in as Wengen, Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen - I cannot think of one place in Switzerland that will fulfill any Alpine Wonderland dreams and it is easy to get to from Germany or Zurich - via Bern.
And if doing this trip before the end of November then you can take advantage of a great offer of a Swiss Pass - 2 for the price of 1 on 4-day Swiss Passes - either consecutive day ones or flexipasses - would cover all trains to and from the Jungfrau Region including to mountain villages as well as lake boats on Lake Lucerne and Lake Zurich and the two lakes that bookend Interlaken - as well as city buses and trams and free entry to over 400 Swiss Museums.
Anyways for lots of great stuff on Swiss trains and passes and things like the Half-Fare Card I always spotlight these IMO fantastic sources - www.swisstravelsystem.com; http://www.budgeteuropetravel.com/id3.html and www.ricksteves.com.

If the train is too costly, the direct bus to Zurich gets you at least there as fast as the direct eurocity trains, also in 3 hours.
