Lufthansa carryon--what do you consider a "personal item?"

Lufthansa carryon--what do you consider a "personal item?"
I am planning to carryon only using a Red Oxx Air Boss as my carryon bag, and I'm thinking of purchasing their Gator bag 12x6x9 for the "personal item." Any advise?

Additional items which are allowed in the cabin:
In addition to your hand baggage and technical appliances you may take the following items into the cabin:
A handbag, wrist bag or small bag (or small laptop bag) and their content
A coat, shawl or blanket
A small camera or a pair of binoculars
An appropriate amount of reading material for the journey
A infant carrier and baby food for the flight
Crutches or other orthopedic aids you are depending on

I carry a very small purse, so for the flight, along with my carry-on, I take a folding tote, which I insert my purse into. Then I can fit other items in there as well. It folds back up to pocket-size for travel, then I use it for the flight home filled with souvenirs (I check the carry-on on the way home).

A refrigerator. You should only pack the ones with detachable freezers.
Also, according to Lufthansa, "an MP-3 player, a portable CD player, a laptop or mobile phone."

An EPAP machine for instance. Maybe expensive camera equipment, musical instruments. KLM certainly allow a camera bag in addition to carry-on and a personal item, though not all airlines are so generous.
Certainly when my son flies for work he carries on all the sound gear he needs for making whatever programme it is, and the cameramen carry on their cameras. Only gear that can be hired if necessary at the destination is checked.

Usually, Lufthansa is very liberal with carry-ons. In fact, they hardly look what you have as carry-ons.
I have seen passengers in economy class carrying two large bags plus purses etc. and the flight attendants were helping to place the staff into the overhead bins.
The only exception might occur at foreign airports where non-Luftansa ground staff is employed. I especially found illiterate ground staff at U.S. airports very strict and rude.

Thanks everyone for the replies. My "personal item" is about the size of a briefcase, but more square in size. It's no problem on US flights, but this will be our first flight on Lufthansa.

I do only carry on when I go to Europe. I use a 21 inch bag that expands (for the trip home I check it). My personal bag is a fully stuffed jansport backpack that I put my small purse into when I go thru the gate. No one has ever said it's too big to be my personal bag. I think for Transatlantic, the airlines are loosening up a bit, as long as you can shut the overhead compartment.
