Lucerne

Hi

I am going to Lucerne in June this year and was wondering if anyone had stayed at either the Hotel Drei Konige or Hotel de la Paix, and what their thoughts were of these two hotels?

Many thanks

It appears you are looking for less expensive rates.. consider Hotel Goldener Stern, across the river and just beyond the Jesuit church. The location is about 800 meters from the train station and is very walkable to Lucerne's old town, Rathuis, Musegg walls, etc. Very plain rooms but serviceable; we would stay there again.

Rates/double: 110-150chf/76-105€

Hello Travelnut,
Thanks for the name of Goldener-Stern. We will be in Lucerne in May and I also need a clean budget hotel. I notice from their website they have two restaurants. Did you eat there? Can you give any advice on good, less expensive meals in the area (under 50 euro for two)? Thanks in advance.

I think they mean there is the breakfast room on one floor, and then a nicer 'dinner' restaurant on the next floor. I don't recall exactly because if you enter the building on one street, the level is different than if you enter on the street on the other side of the building (at least, that's how I remember it). And we only ate breakfast, which was breads, cereals, juice, coffee - the usual. You should review the menu at Goldener Stern to see if it 'sounds' good - I wouldn't be afraid to try it.

We ate one dinner at Brasserie Bodu, in the old town area... I don't remember the meal total, but we don't eat expensively, so it couldn't have been too bad... it was mostly French cuisine.

Brasserie Bodu/Haus zum Raben
Kornmarkt 5 tel. 410 0177
(this might show 2 names b/c I vaguely recall there being two doors at the same corner).

The next night, we ate pizza at some 'chain' type place, definitely not repeatable.

We enjoyed having a drink on the riverside terrace at the Pickwick Pub (they have a cheap hotel, but it's over the bar and no breakfast).

Restaurant Lupin is located at the end of the old town, not too far from the Löwen Denkmal and the Old Swiss House.

Decent prices and very good food. Highly recommended!

Also, Cucaracha is a great Mexican restaurant with a happy hour and great daqueries...best ones in Lucerne and vicinity. Located within Hotel Schiller.

Oh yes, a nice wine restaurant with reasonable prices is located very close to the Kappel's Bridge. It's called La Bonne Cave and has a limited but nice range of dishes.

Hi. I also stayed at the Goldener Stern and would recommend it. Travelnut is right about there being two entrances on opposite sides of the building (and thus on two different streets) and one is on one floor and the other is on the next floor up. There were indeed two different restaurants and they did serve meals other than breakfast but we only ate breakfast there. We did have dinner one night at the Hotel des Alpes which is right on the river near the bridge. The setting was great (we had an outdoor table) and it was under 50€ for two, but I didn't think the food was that great. In fact I didn't think any of the food in Switzerland was that great, but then I had just come from Sicily, land of fabulous and inexpensive food so maybe my standards were a bit high. Other than the food I loved Switzerland and especially Lucerne.
