London in January??

I have seen wonderful deals for air-and-hotels for London in January and other winter months. My husband and I may be able to arrange to be away for a January vacation this year. I know the days(hours of daylight) are mighty short in January. If you have done London in January, would you comment on how the weather and the short days affected the trip for you? Thanks.

I was in London "on holiday" in January of 1996.
Besides the brutal cold (the Thames was completely frozen over), it was a wonderful trip.
I saw several plays, toured museums, went sightseeing, and in general had a wonderful time.
My only advice is to dress warmly!

London in January can be wretched with a penetrating cold and dampness. You can alleviate this by spending your time in Harrod's which has its annual sale in January. Body heat radiating from rabid shoppers seeking a bargain (and there are many) will keep you warm.

Check the web site: city.net/countries/united_kingdom/england/london for West End theatre attractions, events, museum and gallery showings.

Check the following for hotel information and sights and sites to visit:
www.bta.org.uk This British Tourism Authority web site is filled with information on destinations, lodging options, events and activities. It also features interactive maps and special online offers.

www.s-h-systems.co.uk/shs.html. The Smooth Hound Agency has a wealth of information on more than 5,000 bed-and-breakfasts, guest houses and hotels throughout Britain. Many sites include photos and maps. Some have online fax-back numbers or email addresses to save you a bundle in long distance charges.

http://beduk.com The web site for B&B My Guest lodging reservation agency. Like the site above, it contains information on a wide variety of accommodations around the country
Back in my former life (before I retired), I went to London on business each January. Since I lived then in Chicago, London seemed practically balmy. Just dress for the damp cold. Anything in sheepskin and wool is fine. Pack a raincoat with a liner. The big bonus was the lack of tourist crowds. Easy to get seats in the best plays, best restaurants, or shop the stores. Somehow, public transportation seemed to work better, people had more time to help you, and it was just a great experience...compared with my mid-summer trips when just the reverse was true. You will have a fine time. Just dress for that awful dampness!
I have not been in London in January, rather in mid-December, and I must say that I loved it. While it drizzled, snowed some, and was dark early, somehow it didn't matter. Plus, I took advantage of the inclement weather by stopping every afternoon for "afternoon tea". I'd pick a nice hotel or restaurant, and spend a few hours enjoying the respite. Plus, by the time I'd leave, I'd feel less bedraggled.

The special deals usually continue through March and you will have somewhat better weather if you can delay your trip until then. If luckly you may experience a touch of spring with the flowers blooming. Have gone in March three times and have enjoyed it very much. Much to see and do during winter and spring.

Been there late November and December---I would compare the weather to Washington, D.C.--damp and dreary with a little snow, a little sleet, unless they have a terribly cold one. The lack of tourists makes up for it! British food is hardy and soul satisfying and nothing is better than afternoon tea in the winter. You will use the underground to get around, so little walking and can go to the theatre every night---love it. If you could go preChristmas it's even more special! I have a meeting every January in DC and will think of you as you will be in a better spot! Go for it!

Kristin - Dont' do it! I LIVE in London and dread November through February because it is soooo dark. The sun sets at 3:30 in the afternoon! We moved from the States 5 years ago and every year January is the hardest for me. You can get cheap flights from November thru March (excluding Christmas). Come in March if possible - the crowds are still small and the weather will be better.

If you must come in January then bring an umbrella, scarf, gloves and a hat (there are lots of cute hats out there that will keep you warm and looking good). I bet it does seem balmy in London compared to Chicago, it rarely snows here! The wind off the Thames will cut through you though so dress for it. And when you do get cold go to one of the great museums, have afternoon tea or go to any of the stores and get some hot bargains in the January sales. All of the stores have a sale in January and July (buy ' Born to Shop London' for best bargains.)

The crowds are much smaller in January, you should be able to see the crown jewels without 'queueing' for hours and get great seats for Les Mis' or any other West End show. - Have a great trip!
