Livorno to Siena
DH and I are taking a Med cruise in June. The last stop is Livorno. We don't want to take one of the ship's excursions. Is it possible to get from Livorno to Siena by train? How long does it take and approx. how much. Would we be better off getting a driver (cab)? Any idea how much that would be and how long a drive it is? Thanks all

Easy to do by train - from Livorno take a train via Pisa towards Florence and get off at Empoli, for trains to Siena. At least hourly service on both lines - should take you about two hours tops. For schedules visit www.budgeteuropetravel.com's home page and click on the link on the home page that says "All European Train Schedules" and you'll instantly get an English page where you just put in the date, Livorno and Siena and you'll get all the train schedules for that day. Easily done by train. No direct trains however, must change in Empoli i believe.

It depends on which trains you can take; the earliest (which you probably won't be able to make) takes only 2h 21 minutes w/change at Empoli.
My only advice for you re docking in Livorno is this: the train station is not all that close to the area where your ship will dock. You can do it by public transport but that can be a real hassle and if you don't know the bus routes, etc., it can be a real trial.
I very strongly suggest you spring for a taxi at the dock which will take you all the way to the rail station. This is really the most convenient way to do it.

I think it would pay you to ask for a quote from Giovanni Sirabella for the whole excursion - shore tours from Livorno are what he does, and it makes a huge difference to be able to stop at two or three spots on your way. You can find him at www.sunflower-tours.com.

Hi Lori,
How about a visit to Florence instead of Siena? About 1:30 hr.
See www.trenitalia.com.
You will want to take a cab from your ship to Livorno Centrale.
