Lines to climb the Florence Duomo

Hi all. It doesn't appear I can reserve a time slot to climb the Duomo in Florence. We won't be arriving until around 11am, so getting in line early isn't an option.

Going in late May, are we likely to encounter long lines? Would they be shorter in the late afternoon (or worse)?

Thanks for any insights.

All I can tell you, from my experience is that we went first thing in the a.m. and walked right in -- no lines. Later that day, we passed the Duomo at several different times, and there was always a line. I can't imagine it will be any different during the high season of late May.

Maybe others can shed some light on whether it's better at the end of the day. I'm assuming you can't do the a.m. of the next day for some reason.

We are doing Florence as a day trip from Rome. I've already been there but didn't get to climb the Dome and would like to revisit the Pitti Palace. The next morning, we will be back in Rome.

I went to the first mass of the day with only the nuns and stayed after my very quiet tour of the church. The tours had not started but 11 am arrival puts you out of that. 55 euro for that tour is sort of a steep price. If I remember correctly May had long lines.

Philly: I figured.

The other possibility is to book a tour through Viator or some other tour company that has skip-the-line tours. I think they do a quick guided tour of the Duomo for under $20/pp. I really don't have a lot of details about that specifically, but you can check availability and times on their website. We've used them a couple of times for a few other short tours (Last Supper, Doges Palace, etc.) and they've been satisfactory.

Thanks, I will look into that. I already know my son and husband wont be interested in a 2 hour tour; shorter would be good.

Could you go in the late afternoon, cocktail hour?

A friend of a friend did it then, and their trip report did not mention crowds.

I was there in November, and walked past the Duomo fairly often. It seems to me there were lines most of the day.
