Brendan, it's not in Quartier Latin, but in Montparnasse very close to the train station in th 14th arr.
The area is lively and safe. Good location to get around (metro and bus).
I shall top a recent post with a lot of useful info re. restaurants and cafes in that area.
Sorry, cannot tell anything about the hotel itself. It's huge and I suppose of very good comfort. I suppose it's a four-star.

Brendan: It's even huge and it is definitely a four-star. Some 950 rooms.

More info at
www.lemeridien-montparnasse.com

I have stayed at Le Meridien montparnesse twice. Air France vacation booked us. Good breakfast, the rooms are large but other than that pretty mediocre. There really is not anything around the hotel, but good acess to metro. We are going to Paris in March and staying at Hotel Danube I love that area the best!!

I stayed there several years ago when we were booked thru an agency. It certainly is comfortable, etc., but it is not a typical Paris hotel; you feel as tho you could be in any American-type hotel in any city of the world. Nothing objectionable about it (a bit far from where I like to spend my time in Paris), but you won't have the experience of staying in a true Parisian hotel.

It is a modern sterile business hotel. There is really nothing on the block that is Parisian. The hotel seems to be full of airline crew. You could just as well in Los Angeles for all you know. The agents like to book these business hotels because they get commissions. If this is kind of hotel you like to stay, it is for you. To find Parisian life, just walk over to the Montparnasse station area, a half large city block away.

If you are looking for more a French hotel, you'll have to do it on your own. But with Internet, it is no longer a chore.

This is the type of hotel agents get commissions on. It's a large, American style hotel. If that is what you want go for it, otherwise try and find a place with more of a Paris atmosphere.
The area is OK - nothing special really. There are lots of great hotels in Paris, it all depends on what you want.

Brendan:
I stayed there in March 2000. I liked it. True it was not a real Parisian hotel but it was a nice room and the staff was A-1. The only thing I was unhappy with was the loooong wait to check in. That might no longer be the case. It is directly across from the Train Station and the bus termial is next to the Train Station. Cross Blvd Montparnesse for the Parisian experience. Nice bakery on Blvd Du Maine also. There was lovely restaurant to the left of the Hotel on the Corner. Terrible with names sorry that I loved. Fixed Price lunch that were great. They had a great cherry tart there! Have Fun!

I stayed at Le Meridian Montparnasse for one night and couldn't wait to leave. You might as well be in any city in the world because the hotel looks and feels like a standard business class hotel.

- 1 hr line up to check-in, 3/4 line up to check out
- request for two double beds was not honored but we were offered a "cot". Once the cot was opened up there was literally no room to move in the room. The room service cart had to be left at the door and trays brought so we could eat on the bed.
- request for non-smoking room was also not honored and the room reaked of cigarette smoke

I've stayed at other Le Meridien hotels and would have to say that this one was a BIG disapointment. For what you will pay for this hotel I would definately find a nice little "parisien style" hotel and book a suite.
