Leaving for Croatia, Nov. 6th

We are leaving for Croatia on Nov. 6th on an arranged tour. Overnights include Zagreb, Bled, Opatija, Plitvice Lakes, Split and Dubrovnik. Any hints on what we should pack, weather conditons, what not to miss, local restaurants, etc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks-ez

We were in Croatia in November 06. The weather really wasn't too bad. Just dress in layers. It was chilly in the mornings and the evenings, but during the day it warmed up nicely so the jacket came off. I don't remember it ever being cold enough where I was uncomfortable. However, I suggest you follow weather reports as your trip gets closer because trying to predict the weather is a useless task!

Have a drink at the Buza Bar in Dubrovnik for us!

Hi Eezam, we just returned from Croatia (Zagreb, Plitvice, Trogir & Dubrovnik). It was hot in Zagreb at the beginning of this month. We left Dubrovnik on the 21st and it was quite chilly in the mornings and evenings by then. Layers are a good choice. The weather was nicer here at home than there, go figure (we live in the Midwest!). I never travel any time of year without my black Pashmina scarf, helps if the wind kicks up and you are not prepared! Naturally Buza, for the view and Mea Culpa for pizza. I'll have to check my notes as we ate at some great little places. Simple food, we are not fine diners while traveling, we like what the locals would normally eat, which is how we eat at home. We loved the country. We stayed in Bled last year when traveling to Slovenia. We did not make it to Opatija. How long do you have? Good travels! Shirley

Shirley - We are going with SmarTours for 15 days. Would love the names of the places you ate at as we don't look for pricey or fancy food when travelling. Looking forward to our trip as I keep hearing good things about where we are going. ez

eezam, I will go thru my notes tonight (good prompt or they sometimes sit too long....). You will love it. Everyone we met was friendly and helpful. While there are areas that still harbor the signs of the war the rebuilding and strides made are far more evident. It is a simply lovely country. Shirley

Click on my name for restaurant and other info. I have yet to go to Bled so am afraid I have no recommendations on that!

November should be a lovely time to go.

Less than 4 weeks to go and things are falling into place. Any suggestions for souvenirs for family members and friends? In the past I have brough back 'fancy' soaps and local honey. ez

Hi, Last September (2007) my husband and I took the SmarTour to Croatia & Slovenia. I wrote a trip report called, I think "Thoughts on a Croatian Trip." You might look at it for some comments.

Another poster, who hasn't been on the board in awhile, and I corresponded privately about the trip, as he and his wife were going in November 2007. I believe that they ran in to snow, at Plitivice, but otherwise seemed to have adequate weather.

If Stephan is your guide, you will find him very knowledgable. He always had some little joke or "prayer" each morning as we started out on the bus. Hard to point out local restaurants , altho we did enjoy the pizza at Mea Culpa in Dubrovnik. We stayed there for 3 more days after our tour ended. Ciao!! mhm

PS: A friend and I are taking the SmarTour: Amazing Thailand + Angor Wat in Feb. 2009. On the Croatian trip, there were at least six couples who had taken it at least once and one 5 or 6 times. Some people on the tour had taken at least 10 SmarTours.

Hi, Do you kow which hotel you will be in, in Dubrovnik? We were at the Argosy, which is a bit out of town--however, there was a bus stop just about a block away, right to the Pile' gate. If you are at the Argosy, the breakfasts are fab! and you will get one dinner which was buffet and very tasty. Not many places to eat around there for your other nights, but if you explore a bit, there is a small shopping center right next to this hotel. There were several restaurants in it and most of our group ate there one night, and several of us ate there on one afternoon. The popular one seemed to be a pizza and pasta "mainly" place. It was not too spendy. I may have mentioned this in my trip report. But just thought of it as I re-read my post above. Ciao!!mhm
