Kiev-Lviw-Prague-Vienna itinerary comments?

We are thinking of going to see a wee bit of eastern europe next April-May and I would appreciate itinerary suggestions. We would fly to Kyiv via Frankfurt, then to Lviw, Prague, and perhaps Vienna. Roughly two weeks time in Europe (outside of fyling there and back), of which at least five days has to be in Lviw (relatives).

Any suggestions on how long to stay in the other three cities, or worthwhile side trips? We like architecture, people-watching, walking in cities, food. Also, is flying cheap and worth the cost over train?

I assume you are considering it for 2004?

I know Prague and Vienna are nice, but perhaps consider not going to Prague... fly into Vienna, and from there fly to Odesa (Vienna is a common stopover to Odesa). From Odesa (Odessa) take the train to Lviv, and from there go to Kyiv (you can then fly home out of Borispol airport).

2-3 days in Vienna, 2 days in Odesa plus an overnight train ride to Lviv, then 5 days in Lviv (perhaps with some side trips with realtives), and 3-4 days in Kyiv. You could easily reverse Lviv and Kyiv, but Borispol tends to be a better airport over Lviv regarding customs and less graft.

Either 2004 or 2005. Probably sooner. Dates would either include Orthodox Easter or our anniversary May 4 or both.

Prague is a must-do for us. The architecture, bridges, opera there is a real draw for us. Unless it is still bad from the floods??? help me here.

Not intereseted in Odessa. A nice view from the sea, but too far from Kyiv on a 2-week, 4 city trip. Kyiw because of its architecture and cathedrals, and Lviw because of my husband's cousin who we dearly love, with whom we will stay.

The reference library of a city near you may have the Thomas Cook European Timetable. This will show you that you can save hotel bills, and daylight hours at airports and flying, if you use 2-berth sleepers. Trains are cheap in Ukraine.
3 days (2 nights) in Kyiv
Kyiv 2029, train with sleepers and a restaurant car, Lviv 0740
5 days (4 nights) in Lviv
Lviv 2115, 4 berth sleepers daily, but 2 berth on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, no catering, Budapest Keleti 1027, taxi to Budapest Deli, leave bags in left luggage, metro to central Budapest, stroll, leave Deli 1310, lunch on board, Vienna West 1550.
Or Lviv 1045, sleepers, restaurant car until Cop at 1715, Vienna South 0722
3 days (3 nights) in Vienna
Vienna South 0650, 1025, or 1425, five hours with buffet car or restaurant car to Prague Holesovice.
3 days (3 nights) in Prague

Please write again if I can help further. Welcome to Europe.

If you need a beautiful inexpensive apartment in the most central, historic and quiet part of dowtown Kiev, e-mail me at [email protected] I own it and it's currently vacant. Truly beautiful and kitchen window faces an almost 1000 y.o. St. Sophia cathedral. Elegant furnishings, newly remodeled, has everything you will need.
Approx. $60/night, but it will depend on the number of people and length of stay.

OK, for various reasons(including relatives in Ukraine advising us not to, for safety reasons!)we did not go in 2003, but now we are thinking about doing this same trip, probably for 18 days outside of travel to/from Europe, in April 2006.

We are really interested in doing a loop such as suggested by benhaines, with the following changes: ideally we would like to start in Lviw, then Kiev after, a couple of days in Budapest, then Vienna and Prague as suggested, plus are there any other cities/villages that anyone would hotly recommend?

Updates?

Hi C,

If you are still doing 5 days in Lviv, then 13 days for Kiev, Budapest, Vienna and Prague is little enough time.

What do you suggest that we focus on if we keep this short itinerary?

Or given that we must do the Ukraine part of the trip, what of the last 3 cities would you skip?

We are budget, independent travellers, who especially love walking in other cities to get a feel for the life of the city. We don't much care for many museums.
