Just came back from England, France, Germany, Austria, and Belgium. Any questions?

We just have a day in Munich (actually a little less) on the Ist of October. We are staying at a hotel which is about 15 minutes walsk from the main railway station. What do you recommend we do for the day. I also need to shop for some porcelain etc. Any suggestions? Thanks
Deepa
I'll be visiting London for a week in November (11/2 thru 11/9). This is my first UK experience. Already have a reservation @ the Hart House Hotel. What do you feel are the top ten "must see & do" in London? Also, have any suggestions for good pubs? I'd like to meet & mingle w/the natives, as well as following the budget route for meals. Did you "do tea"? If so, where & what did it cost?

My brother is stationed in Heidelberg and we'll be visiting in December. We'll only be there 10 days but want to see as much as we can. Any information you have about renting cars in Germany, travel to Paris from Germany by car and/or by train, anything we should definitely see...etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Melissa

I am arriving in Brussels on November 18. I am departing from Amsterdam on November 28. I have a five day Eurail pass. This is my first time to Europe and I need all the suggestions I can get ranging from how to spend my time wisely, so I can visit France, London, and Germany within the above time frame. Also any tours and short cuts on transportation would be deeply appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your time!
In Belgium, you definitely should go to Brugge. Old medieval city. Lots of atmosphere. Very touristic, but funny is a trip on a boat on the canals (like in Venice, Italy).
For more info: have a look at www.brugge.be.

Rose, my dear if you are going to be going to all 5 of these countries on a tour then I don't think you can come home and say you saw Europe. See the post near this one with the subject header about Switzerland to see why I say that. You will come back knowing about how it is to sit on a bus all day, get up at 5 or 5:30 am every day and eat all your bland meals with the same midwestern Americans every day.
Most of the sites you will tell snapshots of through the bus windows or rush out to see for 15 minutes with hordes of others. When you get back home you probably won't even know what two thirds of your photos are of. And Cosmos, my dear. You will be staying at cinder block hotels as far out in the subrurbs as one can get with no easy way to get into the cities at night.

Dear Rose, Don't take the post from Gary to heart. The tone was very condescending. Many people have time and money constraints when travelling. The important thing is that you are going. Get some guide books, check your local library. The library may also subscribe to magazines such as Frommers Budget Traveller, Conde Nasts Travel and Traveller put out by the National Geographic Society. Read up before hand on where you will be visiting. If you have free time, try to go somewhere that interested you while sightseeing on the bus. I always take a sightseeing tour of the highlights in cities and then go back on my own to explore the museums or other places that interested me. Try to find out if there is an open-air market in the places you are visiting. I enjoy buying local foods and having a picnic. Major department stores have a food section if not a grocery store in them which are fun to explore.
Go with an open mind, some research of the places you will be visiting and have fun.
I am planning a trip to Germany in mid-March and would like some advise on whether to rent a car or take the train. I will be traveling from Frankfurt to the Bavarian Alps (Garmisch) and plan on stopping in Munich first and going from there. I would like to take a cruise on the Rhine to see the castles and would like some advise on this also. I'd really like to plan this trip by myself rather than go on a tour, but I'm feeling very overwhelmed with it all right now. HELP! Thanks!
