Itinery Help! Austria OR Switzerland by rail from Venice?
We are ending our Italy stay in Venice and are flying out of Munich three days later. We wanted to see some of Europe by rail and are considering going through Switzerland or Austria. Frommers "Europe by Rail" recommends Venice to Vienna through Ljubljana, Slovenia as being one of the most scenic-- "Stunning at every turn" rides in Europe. Salsburg looks great too. I haven't begun to study Switzerland yet --- I'm hoping some of you could share your experiences with me. My 84 year old mother (in good health and walks fine) is with us so we are just looking to SEE as much as we can without over-taxing her -- Just a lovely sightseeing trip.
Question 2: I read the train station and airport are connected in Munich SO, can you stay in Innsbruck or (?) and take the train to the airport. Our flight leaves at 11:00 a.m. thus avoiding going to Munich just to stay the night? Thanks for your help!

Hi mat,
The train rides over the Alps from Venice to either Vienna or to Munich are both very beautiful.
A couple of days in Munich would not be wasted.
I can recommend the Hotel Uhland.

I think that Frommer may have overstated that Venice - Vienna through Ljubljana (check your map, looks like a dogleg) trip. I did Ljubljana to Venice on the train and have driven around that area and can't recall any scenery worth talking about.
On the other hand, Venice - Verona - Bolzano/Bozen - Innsbruck - Munich will give you some great views of the Alps, and plenty of vineyards from Verona to Brennero.

The trip from Venice to Munich up and over the Brenner Pass has some very nice Dolomites scenery. I've done the trip several times. I'm not sure I'd agree that the scenery THROUGHOUT the trip is "stunning at every turn"..the Glacier Express in Switzerland it isn't..but still a very scenic trip for the most part.
The main rail station in Munich is "connected" to the airport via the S-Bahn (routes S-1 and S-8) but it is not "connected" by main rail in the manner of airports in Zurich, Frankfort, A-Dam, etc. The trip from the station to the airport in Munich will take at least 30-45 minutes depending on the time of day. Some feel the Lufthansa bus is more convenient..some don't.

Thank you for your replies, this is very enlightening to hear from those who have been there. I guess the guide books get carried away sometimes. Any more information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Mat
