itinerary help
We have 16 days in Europe and are spending the first 7 in an apartment in Paris. The plan from there is still in the works. I'm thinking we will take a morning train to Colmar (2-3 nights) and day trip to Strasbourg on the way out of the region. We think we'll head to Salzberg for 3 nights, then travel to Munich for the last 2-3 days since our return flight is out of Munich. Any input? If we take a train from Paris to Colmar can we arrange a stop in Reims on the way? Would a stop in Hallstadt from Salzberg to Munich make sense? We would appreciate any hotel or B&B recommendations in Colmar, Salzberg and Munich. We are traveling with three adults and two young children (age 3 and 1).

Hi km
In Munich, I can recommend www.hotel-uhland.de/enwelcome.html
In Salzburg, I can highly recommend www.ammoos.at.
It is on the outskirts, 12 min by bus to the old town. Bus stop is a 2min walk from the B&B.
>day trip to Strasbourg on the way out of the region.
It takes 7-8 hr to get to Salzburg from Colmar. See www.bahn.de
>If we take a train from Paris to Colmar can we arrange a stop in Reims on the way?
Sure. By a ticket to Reims and another ticket to Colmar.
You might want to consider Paris -> Nancy -> Colmar.
Have you considered staying in Strasbourg and visiting Colmar as a daytrip?
>Would a stop in Hallstadt from Salzberg to Munich make sense?
I wouldn't.
You can stop off at Ludwig's Herrenchiemsee palace. Take the train to Prien am Chiemsee.
Enjoy your visit.

Hallstat is a bit out of your way going from Salzburg to Munich. And it's a little hard to get to by train. You might take a bus tour of the Salzkammergut while you're in Salzburg. It's a beautiful area of lakes and mountains and small towns including Hallstat.
I second Ira's suggestion of Chiemsee. It's one of King Ludwig's castles, located on a island in the middle of Lake Chiemsee. From Prien am Chiemsee, you take a boat to the island and walk to the castle.
Some years ago we stayed in the Hotel Blaue Gans (Blue Goose) right on the pedestrian Getreidegasse in the old center of Salzburg. It is reasonably priced and has some family suites including kitchen. However recent reviews of this hotel at www.tripadvisor.com are mixed.

Agree that Strasbourg has much more to see/do than Colmar. We stayed in the former 4 nights, spending 2 days seeing Strasbourg and a day trip to Colmar. We left very early to get there when the museum opened, toured the town, had a light lunch and then dropped in on a couple of the wine route towns on the way back to Strasbourg.

We just stayed in Bloberger Hof, it is a 20 minute busride from the Alstadt, bus stop is a 2 minute walk from the house. Very clean, friendly, good breakfasts. The rates were reasonable and the view out of our window was amazing.

Re: Salzburg hotels, got to tripadvisor.com for extensive traveller reviews. The Blaue Gans,at which we always used to stay, has drammatically raised prices and has gone this funky artsy theme that we didn't really like. We much preferred its former, traditional Austrian character and restaurant offerings. Hotels Weisse Taube and Am Dom offer better value in the Altstadt, the the former superior to the latter, IMO.
