Italy - Christmas gift for traveler
My boss will be traveling to Italy with his family in March. I would like to give a Christmas gift to tie in with his trip. I have thought of language tapes, guide books, etc. Any other suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Hi Donna,
Language tapes are something first time travellers might not be interested in, so I'd suggest a gorgeous coffee table book like "The Most Beautiful Villages of Tuscany" (have a look at amazon for other titles). It is a wonderful way to revisit your favourite places...or dream of the ones you want to see.
Another suggestion might be a photo album for keeping all their photos when they return. I found one with areas for writing descriptions next to the photos, that also opens up to insert tickets and other memorabilia from the trip. A leather travel journal is also a nice gift, even if it's used for other trips...or for planning.
Hope that gives you a start.

Tobie T my thoughts exactly. personally, I think it is hard to choose a guide book for a family unless you absolutely know their particular interests, whether they already have it or not, etc. I like to choose my own guide books, small language books/tapes, etc - You might consider if that is the route you choose, a gift certificate from a local book store so they can choose a travel guide, but I vote for the photo album, coffee table book of photos or of one area: Rome, Vatican, Museums, Architecture, etc or journal. (if you think they are journal note keepers) - other things I have received geared to travel that I enjoyed are: small binoculars (for viewing the Sistine Chapel, etc) , a magnifier with light (for map reading, etc); leather folder for my passport, plane tickets, etc; but if they are frequent travelers they may already have these items. P.S. I have the Most Beautiful Villages of Tuscany book that TobieT metnioned - my kids bought it for me for Christmas one year after our trip to Italy and it is magnificent. Don't know if they are going to that area but there are others like it on other cities/areas.

I like the guidebook idea. It doesn't have to be the one & only perfect one for them. Many people read thru all different kinds ahead of a trip (then only take their favorite or most appropriate along with).
I think a small Italian phrase book including a restaurant words section would be useful (more than language tapes unless you are sure they are interested in studying).

These are great suggestions - a lot of choices. I will definitely look into the coffee table books and binoculars- I had not thought of that. I have worked with my boss for 10 years and we have exchanged guide books, so I have an idea of what he likes on that score. Thanks all of you for the help.

Donna: I have tried to find this guidebook I had of the Vatican, and am realizing it was lent to someone who did not return (don't you hate that?) and I can't remember the name of it. but if you have your heart set on a guidebook, see if you find this one. It was slim, black (faux type leather cover) with photos and descriptions of everything/ from the different scenes in the ceiling mural to distinct musuem pieces, architecture, etc and it was a joy to have that with us as we did the Vatican. and easy to pack. and it's been lent out numerous times over the past six years....now I just have to track it down - time for a mass email to all my buds to see who owns up to still having it !!! best of luck.

These ideas are just great. And my boss knows about this forum - but he is the lazy sort. When he finds a good travel deal or wants info about a resort or hotel he has asked me to go online and see what the "fodor's people" think My sister does the same thing. Good thing for them I love to do the research!
