Istanbul hotel with a view of Old city
Looking for a hotel with the best views of the Old city acrooss the water (i.e. not a hotel located in the Old city). Any suggestions on Intercontinental vs Swissohel, Conrad, or any other?

From my room at the Marmara Pera, which is across the street from Pera Palas, I had a great view of the river and the old city across the water. The hotel is contemporary and the rooms do not have gobs of charm but I would return for the location and the price. I believe that they have opened a very good restaurant in the hotel since I was there in fall 2005.

Paul, I am happy to help out; you have been great on Asia (I booked the Shanghai Royal Meridien, btw). I checked the web prices before I went to Istanbul and then wrote directly to the manager and managed to get something off the web rates. I have to tell you that the rooms are small, as a few people on TripAdvisor mentioned. This did not bother me, not did the unusual purple color scheme of the rooms. See what else you can dig up and use this for your fall-back. The views are really great, although you are further away than you might think so it is more of a skyline-type panorama; still very striking with the large mosques lit at night. I liked the location very much; I found it much better than the Taksim area. But I am not sure about the restaurant I mentioned earlier; it seems that there is only the ground-floor cafe, where you take the bountiful (included in room price) breakfast.
I also stayed in the Old city for several nights at the first part of the trip.

Definitely not the Ritz-Carlton, as it is too far down towards Dolmabahce Palace. You can get fantastic views of the Bosphorus, however.
The Swiss Hotel is also too far away, in my opinion, although I have not actually seen any of the hotel rooms.
The Intercontinental is a big, sprawling hotel that seems a little frayed and faded. I am sure you can see Sultanahmet from the upper floors, as it is a towering hotel on a hill.
