Istanbul - Marmara Pera or Intercontinental Ceylan?

Istanbul - Marmara Pera or Intercontinental Ceylan?
Has anyone been to either of these hotels? Which one is better? The Marmara Pera is closer to where we want to be. Is the Intercontinental worth the extra distance? Thanks!

The Marmara Pera is a good 4 stars at pera district and modest one.
Ceylan is central, close to Taxim, opposite to Hyatt and 5 stars.
If you are not using much of the hotels facilities and want to explore the area you should be fine with staying at the Pera district and with The Marmara.
I think it is not only the distance but the rates are also different !

I stayed at the Marmara Pera in 2005.
I thought it was fine and very well located. It is a business hotel so does not have any "charm," but I would stay there again for the location. The breakfast was very good and you can ask for a room with a view of the sea and Sultanahmet.
Since I stayed there, a restaurant has opened in the hotel which I believe has gotten very good write ups. Murat could probably give you the scoop on that..

Thanks for the replies! So, the thing is that we got a very good deal on the Intercontinental and it is pretty much the same price as the Marmara Pera. So my question is, price being equal, do you stil recommend the Marmara Pera over the Intercontinental?

incidentally, we will be there in the winter, and we are both on very strict diets so we will be mostly bringing our own food, so a restaurant makes no difference to our decision. thanks

The Marmara Pera is closer to the places where you want to be.
However Intercontinentals rates are not any different than The Marmara.
Altough I am more in business relations with The Marmara's in this case I would say Intercontinental might be an upgrade for your stay.

Murat, thank you so uch for your reply! One more question. I believe the Intercontinental is in the Taxim area, and I have been reading that Taxim is not so safe. We are 2 women traveling, so I just wanted to check if it will be safe for us. Thank you!

Yes the hotel is in Taxim and safety issue would be the same as old part of Istanbul....Bussy center of Istanbul and to my understanding infact safer as a lot of attention is paid to this location.
You should be very fine being in this part of the city.

I was at the Intercontinental in July of 2005 to buy a ring at Maya which is one of the lobby shops of the hotel.
I thought the lobby was a tad shabby. There is a swimming pool, however, which is a BIG plus for someone like me who likes to swim on a hot summer day.
I stayed at the Intercontinetal in Athens this summer and the rooms really needed to be updated. They were very large with lounge area and HUGE bathroom.
We stayed at the Ritz-Carlton whilst in Istanbul. BEAUTIFUL hotel with Russian hookers at the pool. (Fun to watch them with their fat, cigar-smoking billionaire "boyfriends."
