ireland - aran islands, cliffs of moher

Hi. My husband, daughter, and I will be in Western Ireland for a week and we'd like to go to Dun Aenghus on Inishmore as well as to the Cliffs of Moher. My daughter is a light (22-lb) 19-month-old who regularly rides in a frame backpack on my husband's back. Is the hike up to Dun Aenghus safe for the two of them that way? (And now that I mention it, I'm slightly afraid of heights - am I likely to wish I'd skipped this site?)

Will they be safe walking up to the Cliffs of Moher? (I won't look over!)

Collsy, I don't know anything about Dun Aenghus. But we were at the Cliffs in late March on a very, very windy day. If you happen to get a day as windy as that one, the backpack might not be a great idea. But, otherwise, I don't really see why it'd be a problem.

Also wanted to mention that I have a problem with heights too. I didn't know how I'd react to the Cliffs. But I didn't have any problem at all. In fact, I enjoyed them very much. My problem is with bleachers or nosebleed seats in a stadium or theater. Places where I feel like I could just tumble all the way down. But there's a wall at the top of the Cliffs. So I didn't have that feeling that I could fall. Maybe you experience your problem with heights differently than I do. But that's my two cents, for what it's worth!

If you are in reasonable shape the walk up to Dun Aenghus should be no porblem and once you get there the views are spectacular. If you don't like heights you don't have to go near the edge to injoy the view. The only thing I found dangerous on Inshmore are the small vans that pack tourists around the island, if you are walking on the road keep an eye out. The cliffs are all fenced in now so you should feel quite secure. Have fun

Collsy,

I went to both last year and would highly recommend going. I was fortunate and had wonderful weather on each of the days and no wind at all.

On Inishmore I rented a bicycle at the ferry dock and cycled up to Dun Aenghus on the high road (took me about 45 minutes) and still had no problem with the hike up to Dun Aenghus, although I did not have a 22 pound baby on my back!

The Cliffs of Moher were no problem, very accessible walkway/steps along the cliffs with a wall between the walkway and the edge. While I was there most people stayed on the walkway but there were a few adventurous souls who hopped over the wall and were sitting sunning themselves on the grassy area between the wall and the edge of the Cliffs, not something I would venture to do, but as I said it was such a prefect day, I guess they couldn't resist.

Enjoy your trip!

I was a little bit daunted by the walk up Dun Aenghus when looking up at it. Then I noticed little grannies doing it with no problems... it is beautiful there. Gorgeous views and interesting landscape. You should go for it.

It can be very windy at the Cliffs of Moher so be careful. We jumped the wall and went up onto a point. The Cliffs were our first stop on both trips. I told my DH the first time that Ireland was ruined for me because I had seen the most beautiful sight on the very first day. I was wrong but that gives you some idea of how gorgeous it is.

My wife and I visited the Cliffs of Moher during our honeymoon in 1991. I still get a nervous sweat in my hands when I think about it. There were no safety partitions in 1991 at the Cliffs and much of the Cliffs slope downward- way downward. People must have gone over the side before.
