If you could go anywhere in the world you haven't already been, where would you go?

I saw the thread on places you could do without, and it gave me an idea. What are the places you would very much like to visit, but haven't or can't? In other words, if someone gave you a one-week trip to visit anyplace in the world, where would you go, why, and what would the runners-up be? I'm thinking I would choose Egypt, because I have always wanted to see the main attractions there. Runners up would be Peru and Kenya or another African country (hey, I haven't done the research as this is just a dream.) How about you?

I am with you Cindy, I would love to take a Safari, and see the pyramids. Also, my best girlfriend just hiked up to Everest base camp (and people think I travel a lot!)by herself and had a glorious, spiritual trip... that would be kind of interesting... but I think Africa first, then New Zealand then Nepal..... Guess I'll be checking out a few different "lounges" now won't I? Well we get to visit Greece, then there is the spa trip to France for my *gasp 40th b-day.....(still 5 years away, but as has been oft stated on this forum, the cure for coming home is........)

Italy, Italy, Italy! Rome, Florence, Venice, Pompeii, Tuscany, I dream about all of them. Significant Other has no interest in going there (thinks it's fast becoming a Third World country and has no interest in it) and since I'm a novice traveler I'm too nervous to go on my own (yet). Maybe one more trip under my belt will give me the confidence I need to brave Italy alone. Ciao.
I have just recently been dreaming about going to Morocco. It seems so exotic...the desert, the golden days and the starry nights, and the great art and architecture, the old world feel--going back to the basics of living (sensual living) and seeing the world as it once was, just sounds so appealing...

My runners up would be Jerusalem or Egypt(too). But there are so many beautiful places out there that I would love to see-- Venice under the stars -- The Amazon--
so many places so little time : )

Oh, no. Someone is being prevented from going to Italy. That simply won't do. Italy is my absolute favorite vacation spot. I went by myself years ago, and then I dragged my significant other (now husband). I think it may be time for an ultimatum.

Everyone, thanks for your thoughtful responses.

Zimbabwe in the first place. The reason? Have been on a safari in Kenya which was great and can't get enough of the wildlife but prefer a less touristy country.
Runner-up no. 1: Botswana for the same reason. Runner-up no. 2: the Seychelles.
Hope my dreams will ever come true...

Just a little side note to Italian...I don't think this is a good idea for everyone, and it might be a bad idea for a lot of people, but this is how I got my husband to take his first trip, how my mother in law got my father in law to go with us to Greece and my mother got my father on a cruise to Alaska. BUY THE TICKETS!!! But use extreme caution with this radical approach... I just always lived by the motto, "it's far better to regret something you HAVE done, then to regret something you HAVEN'T done". Love is precious and life is short. Good luck, many on his forum will be rooting for you!

Thyra,

I like your style. Italian, make sure you line up an alternate travel companion in case S.O. balks. Me, for instance!

I've always wanted to go to base camp at Everest, ever since I read the book "Into Thin Air." As far as making the climb, thanks, but no thanks.

I'd give a lot to go the the monasteries of Studenica, Mileseva and Sopocani.I have only seen photos of the frescos and they blow me away. Unfortunately they may indeed have been blown away in the raids on Kosovo.

CINDY, I made a list about 15 years ago
of 12 places I had to see.Luckily,
I have hit them all except one. That is
New Zealand. My new list now includes
Ireland, South Africa, and Bali. I did
drop Patagonia from my first list since
I will never get Susan there.

Definitely would be New Zealand and Australia for about 2 weeks each. Almost made it to New Zealand with a ski club package but couldn't get the time off when trip length changed. Costs are really prohibitive to that part of the world, but hope to make it someday.
To "Italian in another Life" - GO! You can do it by yourself if the fool won't go with you. If you're concerned about the bigger places (Rome etc.) start out with the Lakes area. We just came home from the lakes and I've posted info on here. And one of the things I remember thinking about while we were there was that I would have felt totally safe and comfortable by myself this time. In fact, I think I had more of a true Italian experience on this trip as opposed to my other trips to Italy. GO!

Antarctica via a cruise from Patagonia. We might go this winter – (herself has announced it's "a possibility," a term she usually employs when "no, you idiot" would be impolitic. But this time I think it might mean "maybe.") Can any of you provide me with favorable ammunition?

I would like to return after many years and some maturation (mine, that is) to Isfahan in Iran, a city from the dreamtime. It's almost like I've never been because I've forgotten so much.
Grazie buoa gente. Siete molto gentili.

Was hoping for an enormously romantic and adventure-filled Italian vacation with SO, but it if he can't get excited about it, it would be like dragging a wet blanket along. Nessun! I'd rather go alone.

Have always felt nervous about being a woman alone in a city like Rome, especially because I tend to wander with my head in the clouds when I'm on vacation. Probably not too smart.

I tell you though, I feel I was born to eat gelato and stomp grapes. Italy calls to me like nowhere else on earth.

Dear Italian, if you don't go, I am going to cry! If you are afraid to go it alone, do any of the other Fodorites know how to find appropriate travel partners? I am sure someone does.... Have you considered an organized tour? How about renting an apartment for one week so that you can have a base and making day trips? Heck if we weren't booked for Greece, I'd meet you there!!! Please Please go!

I feel that I can realistically go to the places I want to in Europe, probably but my increasing arthritic condition will effectively rule out Antarctica & Macchu Picchu and the heat will rule out Egypt and Petra. But I would love to see all of those.
