Ideas for a 14 day tour of Austria, Budapest & Ptague

Me n my wife intend to travel in the first 2 weeks of October.

We are in our late 40s.

We want to enjoy the natural beauty of these places as also explore each of these places in detail, experience local life, markets & see all historical places.

I have planned my tour as under :

Mumbai to Budapest - 3 days in Budapest incl. the arrival day

Budapest to Prague - 3 days in Budapest incl. the arrival day

3 days in Vienna
3 days in Innsbruck
3 days in Salzburg

How does it look ?

Please suggest as this is our first time to these countries

Thanks

Cut out one day in Innsbruck and Salzburg and add them to the capital cities.

Hi Shai,

Look up your itinerary at www.google.com/maps in the order
Budapest-->Vienna -->Salzburg --> Innsbruck --> Prague.

How important is Innsbruck? If you are not a ski fanatic, I have the following suggestion:

Fly into Prague - 3 nights. They are more cosmopolitan than Budapest and more used to English speaking visitors.

It is no more difficult to be unable to read Czech than it is to be unable to read Hungarian.

Train to Munich - 2 nights - rent a car.

Drive to Fuessen - 3 nights. Visit Neuschwanstein and Linderhof
( https://www.hohenschwangau.de/430.html and
https://www.european-traveler.com/ge...-park-bavaria/ )

Drive as close to Salzburg as you can and drop off the car in Germany - unless you can find someone who will let you pickup in Germany and drop off in Austria.

(See https://www.europcar.com/
http://www.gemut.com/
https://www.sixt.com/ )

Visit Salzburg - 2 night
Train to Vienna - 3 nights
Train to Budapest - 3 nights

Fly home.

In Fuessen, I can reccomend
http://www.hotel-hechten.com/en-index.html
In Salzburg, I can recommend
http://www.ammoos.at/main.php?language=en&m=home)

I hope this helps.

Enjoy your your journey.

If you are not going to Budapest, add 1 night to Munich, and 1 to Salzberg.

If going mainly to cities take the train - you have no time to meander thru countryside- there are also overnight trains Budapest-Prague I believe- anyway for loads of great stuff on planning a train trip there check www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com. And check out the European East Railpass that lets you hop on just about any train in those countries - first class I would recommend for train travel - more relaxed in many ways=- on the trip of a lifetime don't pinch pennies.

Thanks for all of your replies. They are very useful.

Is it worth going to Budapest or should I do Munich instead?

Revised tour itinerary :

Mumbai to Vienna - 4 days in Budapest incl. the arrival day
Vienna to Salzburg - 3 days
Salzburg to Muncih - 4 days
Salzburg to Prague - 4 days

PLease advise Munich or Budapest ?

I'd do Munich instead - closer to your other destinations but each has its own pluses- I'd spend three days in Budapest and Prague and maybe put in Bavaria - doing some day trips from Munich to places like Fussen and Mad Ludwig's fantasy castle Neuschwanstein.

Land in Vienna - Prague -Salzburg and fly out of Munich.

I might be biased but Budapest is definitely worth visiting, way more authentically Eastern-Europe-y than Munich. Also, waaay cheaper to stay in.

Yes Munich is much more spiffy modern than Budapest - too bad you can't do both - can't go wrong.
