Iceland/ landmannalauger hike help

Hi, I am planning Iceland July 2014 and have questions on this landmannalauger hike.
How to get there ? Is a rental car allowed on the road to there ? I see river crossings so I am guessing no. Next, the bus. How long is the bus ride from Hella ? I only wanted to do a day trip/ hike there.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks , Bill

I gather you don't want to do the whole hike? It is 50 plus kilometers, which would be quite a day hike. We just did the Þórsmörk to Skogar section which is considered an add-on to the route you are talking about. It was very spectacular and much easier to do as a day hike than what you are talking about.

You might want to look at this, although there is plenty of material on the web.

Sorry - starting to understand the day hiking bit. I was thinking you wanted to do part of the Laugavegurinn hike.

This might help on the rental car question:

Thank you very much for the information. We will be there 5 nights and already want more but it is a stopover after 5 nights in Sweden.

You will love it. We saw a couple of 4x4s knocked out of commission by the water. Personally I would take the bus. There is a trip report under my name if you are bored for several hours.
