Good evening, Luciana
"cheap" accomodations can be gotten from
hostels, b&b's and one or two star hotels.
For a good source of hotels, check out
www.venere.it/ surf into city, class
of hotel wanted 1 or 2 stelle. This
will hold good for Rome and Firenze.
www.veniceinfo,it/ will give you the
hotels by class and also their location.
www.enit.it/eng/ is another source for
hotels in IT. Hostels cn be found on
www.hostels-aig.org/.... and for B &b's
wluld suggest your surf into the IT search machine, www.vigilio,it/
Good surfing, Richard of La Grange Park,
IL...
Although nowhere as extensive as its cousin network in France, you might find it useful to check out Logis d'Italia at www.logis.it/eng/geogfr.htm - - I just came back from Venice, where I stayed at Villa Stella (on Lido) - - i knew that the Logis d'Italia collection existed, but it had fallen off my radar screen, until I stayed at this particular property.

This is not necessarily an endorsement of the option of staying on Lido - - in fact, it's a little more hassle than I would ordinarily want. But if this one place is representative, the value is good, and the staff was very friendly.

Best wishes,

Rex

In Florence, try Hotel il Bargellino. This is more of an old-fashioned pensione, not fancy, but quite comfortable. It's a short walk from the Accademia. I can't find the phone number, but I've posted it on this forum before, you can do a search for it. In Venice, the Bernardi Semenzato was quite inexpensive and comfortable, with a convenient location.

Florence: Pensione Bretagna is ideally located along the Arno, within walking distance of everything. The breakfast room is lovely, with a view over the river. Rooms themselves are extremely basic (singles much like a college dorm room), but everything is spotless, and the price is right! (Think I paid Lit 75,000 for a single with the bathroom down the hall, omitting breakfast, last year.)
When I was in Rome in February, I stayed at a hotel called "Hotel Scotthouse". It's near the main termini-which in ALL the guide books, it said "bad neighborhood". I am a single female, and I had no problem getting around!

You can access their website at www.hotelscotthouse.it; I think that's the correct website for them. If not, go to any website for Italy and they will have them listed. PLUS the price I paid for was 60.000lira (about $30 a night!) and It was clean, roomy, the clerks were great--Especially a clerk named Simone. He was so helpful booking me on tours and telling me how to get from one place to another.

If you need more info, let me know--hope you have a good time in Rome!!!
Oh---I forgot to tell you something else. The bathroom is inside the room!! You have shower and toilet and sink!!! Everything you need. I was on the fifth floor. Also, there is a neighborhood restaurant across the street that was very friendly...The security around the hotel was good. They had cameras everywhere and the clerks buzzed you in to all the doors necessary to get in and around the hotel. Simply cheap and luxurous at the same time!!! Also, there was a television in the room too!!! Enjoy
