How much time for Prague and Budapest?

We will be in Eastern Europe for 13 days dividing the time between Prague, Budapest, Salzburg and perhaps Vienna. Any ideas as to how many days to allot to each city and its country? We arrive after several days in St. Petersburg.

Prague is amazing, if a little touristy. I say, whatever you do, hit Prague during the week. And make sure you bring tons of film!

If I were you I might cut out Salzburg and go to Ljublana (i've heard great things) or Munich instead. I can say Prague is at least a 3 night city, with a morning train into and evening train out. My aunt and uncle had only good things to say about Budapest when they went about 5 years ago. I'm sure its almost as touristy as Prague, though, now.

I heard Rick Steeves talking the other day about how Krakow (sp?) is the
'new' Prague. Maybe worth some research?

I would say, though, to shake it up a little bit. Prague, Budapest, and Vienna may be all too similar to spend so much time traveling between them. Look into Berlin, possibly, as a destination. The train ride from Prague is about 4 hours, and its relaxing and quite pretty scenery. Berlin is a good contrast to Prague/Vienna/Budapest, in my own opinion. I don't know if Salzburg is worth your time, if your looking for kitch and cute check out the Romantic Road in Bavaria instead of Salzburg, some of my favorite spots are Noerdlingen, Dinkelsbuehl, and of course Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Have u found hotels for your proposed destinations yet?

Thank you for your comments. Salzburg was chosen for its wonderful music festival, proximity to the salt mines, Munich and alpine location. We hope to do day trips around the area- they are reasonable and very pleasant looking. One day trip into Munich to see the renovated Alte Pinotek, lunch and a small anthropological museum that I love.

We are all set for hotels, thank you, with the exception of Bratislava.

Have been to Vienna before. Would prefer to get of the cities for a bit.

Again, thank you for your comments.

We recently had 3 days plus a little in Budapest and probably could have filled a couple more. We had an itinerary where we had other places to be though as well.

Didn't do a lot of museum stuff - just walks and some of the churches and generally seeing the city. I feel like we'll probably go back to fill out the list someday, as it's a great town.

I missed the comment about wanting to get off of the cities. As far as country - we went east from Budapest enroute to and from Romania, so I'm not sure this would fit as well into your plans, but Eger is wonderful. Full of Baroque buildings and the Minorite Church on the main square is gorgeous. Also the Turkish minaret is the only remaining such tower this far north in Europe. See egeronline.hu for some info.
