How is this one week plan in Spain? (3-4 days in Majorca)
Hi!
I am unsure about how practical this idea is, so any advice is welcome! I must arrive and leave from Majorca.
March 6th 2016- Arrive 1:45 Pm in Majorca..Spend the day in Palma
March 7th - Fly to Barcelona, arrive in early afternoon. Spend day in Barcelona
March 8th - In or around Barcelona (possible day trip tour)
March 9th - Fly back to Majorca, pick up rental car around noon
March 10th- Drive around more, not sure where to stay the night
March 11th - Drop off car in evening time, spend night in Palma
March 12th- Fly out
Some things I'd like to see (but I'm flexible) iin Majorca is Formentor, Valdemossa, maybe Soller or Fornalutx. Basically it seems like I should stay on the west side.
So I have some questions:
* Is my overall plan do-able in the timeframe?
* Is it easy/safe to drive to all of these places if I'm American and have never been to Spain before?
* What stuff should I try to see while driving, any additions or subtractions to my list?
* Where (general area or specific places) should I spend the night on March 9th and 10th?

We Europeans would never do such an itinerary - too rushed and too much time losing for travelling. We would say, Mallorca has more than enough to offer for a full week, and the side trip to Barcelona is too complicated. Since you are American, I can understand that you want to see as much as possible.
Still, with such limited time, I would not advise a daytrip from Barcelona. If Barcelona is so important for you, limit your time in Barcelona to getting a quick impression of the city but do not drive into the surroundings. There are a few places to visit on a daytrip, but Mallorca has more and better attractions.

Mallorca is perfectly safe. Driving is easy with a few caveats: The old towns have very narrow streets and limited space for parking. So, rent a small car which is easier to navigate. We have even spottet celebrities unwinding from these ridiculously small cars. Otherwise, the roads are good and, in March, traffic will be easy.

You are right that the Western shore and mountain range is most scenic. See Valldemossa, Soller, drive the scenic coastal road, walk through the gorge of Sa Calobra to the beach etc. You may take the old-fashioned train from Palma to Soller which runs through the orange groves. Look into a guidebook to identify more attractions - there are hundreds of them on the island, including visiting historical farms and mansions, castles, wineries, tanneries, caves and much more. Find what interests you and wrap your itinerary around it.

Somewhere in't need to stay near the beach because it will be chilly for swimming. (If you are a hardy nature you might swim in a shallow bay which warms up more easily, e.g. in the bay of Soller.) The choice of places to stay in Mallorca is overwhelming. It is also a matter of budget and style. I love this one:

A bit of an odd trip, Barcelona has enough for your time without a day trip out but you can take the train along the coast and visit the Gaudi workshops for instance without a tour bus.
Mallorca, west coast has the most mountains, visit the odd monastery and focus on the NW for hiking and bird watching. Towards the East coast you'll find pearl manufacture, glass blowing and yet another monastery.
Not sure I'd do Barcelona as well, I might look at another island for a day if I got bored.
