How can I get from Rome to Tuscany to Positano?

Hello, this will be my first time to Italy and I have narrowed it down to where I want to go. I am flying into Rome, but then want to go to Tuscany for a day or two, and also Positano and then back to Rome within 7 days. Is this possible?

Yes, it's possible. You don't say where in Tuscany you want to go so it's difficult to advise how to get there and what transportation method works best.

HI L,

It is possible, but not advised.

T is North of Rome.

P is South.

You only have 7 days.

Save one for your next visit.

However, you could fly into Naples and spend 2 nights in Positano.

Rent a car in Sorrento and drive to Tuscany for 2 nights.

Drop the car in Orvieto or Chiusi, and take the train to Rome for two nights.

Fly home.

Enjoy your visit.

The way I read your question was that Tuscany and Positano was 7 days and Rome was not included in the 7 days. Are you planning to do Rome, Positano, and the entire region of Tuscany in 7 days??????

Hi lisa,
as Adrienne already told you... is doable but not very advisable.
Thuth is Florence is only 90 minute train trip away from Rome.. but visiting needs at least 2 days, 1 more whole day I suggest you to spent in the nearby like Siena (less than one hour driving from Florence) and San Gimignano.
It means you have only 3-4 days left to visit Rome which I really think is a little less than enough to feel yourself "at home". Forget about Positano and nearby as these places are so beautyful (Positano, Amalfi, Capri) and dense of history (Pompei, Ercolano) that you will need another trip only for them.

Hi Lisa,

I would stay in Rome for the entire 7 days and, if I had to see Tuscany, I would plan day trips to Chiusi or Orvieto to get a feel of the Tuscan/Umbrian countryside. Nice video of Chiusi here:

With regard to Positano, you can take a day trip from Rome to see Pompeii. Positano is meant to be experienced while relaxed. See Positano video here:

Italy's 20 regions are each like little different countries, with their own culture, accent, and food.

For a first trip to Italy and Rome, I'd get comfortable in Rome and plan to head back to Italy again to see some other regions. I would plan all days in Rome and really enjoy the eternal city's history, culture, food, and lifestyle.

Buon Viaggio!

If you have only 7 days total i would stay in Rome and do a day trip or 2. Or do 4days Rome and 3 either Tuscany or Amalfi Coast. Too little time to do all 3.

Thanks everyone for all of the info! After reading through the responses and researching online, I cut Tuscany out. We plan on doing Rome & Positano (and maybe spend a day in Naples on our way to Positano). It is me and my "cool" aunt, i'm single, and i'm using this trip because I had a voucher from a cancelled honeymoon this year!

By the way - what time of year are you traveling? It might make a difference on whether it would be advisable to visit Positano or Tuscany, as Positano will be virtually shut down in the winter months and there may be more things to do and see in Tuscany during the colder months.

Travel by train from Roma to Vernazza, then train to Firenze, then train to Roma, then we prefer renting a car at the Roma airport south side of city & driving to the Amalfi coast--very easy--autostrada (like interstate hwy) most of the way to Sorrento, then 2-lane coastal hwy. If you don't want to drive, then you can either make the multiple connections (train/bus) from Roma to Napoli to Sorrento to Positano or you can book w Marozzi Bus line per instructions in copied post below:

"For anyone who has experienced the frustration I have in trying to find out how to book a bus from Rome to Amalfi, fear no more.

The official bus service is the Marozzi Bus line. Their website is www.marozzivt.it which is unfortunately in Italian, however, this is how you go about booking online.

Click on Prenota marozzi (booking)and then on prenotazione (reservations). Wait for the page to load and choose the day you wish to travel on from the calendar which may be found on the top left of the page. Now enter the partenza (city you are travelling from) and the destinazione (city you are travelling to) and click Ricerca. Details of departure and arrival times will now appear in the table below.

Click on the details in the table (highlight it) and two more tables will appear below - the one on the left highlights one way tickets and return PLUS frequent traveller tickets, while the one on the right brings up the interior layout of real time seating availability on the bus. Sit on the right if travelling to Amalfi, Positano or Sorento to take in the views.

Select whether you want a one way ticket (corsa semplice) or a return ticket (andata e ritorno). Click on the seating of your choice (the seats will appear in green as you select them). If you are happy with your choice, click on prenota (book).

You will now be taken to a secure online booking system which will highlight the fare and ask for your credit card details and type of card (read it carefully as there are different options).

Selet the type of card you are paying with and complete your card details. If you are satisfied submit and print the confirmation.

The above process may be followed to find out fares only. Follow all steps until you are taken through to the secure online booking form. Instead of submitting the booking at this stage, cancel the booking.

Should you experience any problems, I highly recommend that you e-mail Raffaele on [email protected], as he was an absolute pleasure to deal with and very quick in responding.

NB: When viewing to see if there are available seats, the seats selected will be BLOCKED for up to a day, even if you do not follow through with the reservation. This is the only negative I found as I tried to book and made an error and on returning to the booking form could not re-select the seats I wanted."
