Hotel on Mont Saint Michel besides Le Mere Poulard
We are traveling to Mont Saint Michel in the middle of October and meeting a friend who is staying at the Hotel Le Mere Poulard. I heard the hotel is very expensive. I would appreciate any recommendations for less expensive places directly on Mont Saint Michel.

Mont Sain Michel is a very crowded place that has been supported by pilgrims and tourists for over 900 years. In general the hotels and restaurants all charge prices that reflect that supply and demand.

I don't recall the name of our hotel, just that the room was the teeniesttiniest I have ever encountered in my travels, the dinner (included in the room) was not very good, and they told us to be back in the hotel by 10 pm or we would be locked out.

I wouldn't recommend staying overnight at Mont Saint Michel unless you are lucky enough to be there during a high tide period. Brittany and Normandy are full of charming country towns to stay.

Am departing soon for a trip to France although not Normandy this time, but have contacted the French Tourism Board on the Internet and have promptly received tons of great information. Having been to Normandy, I would agree with the above. If you're driving a beautiful little town is Honfleur and there's a great country hotel there called Le Ferme. It's not cheap but it's very good value. If you're staying in Paris consider Mt. San Michel as a long daytrip via train.
Ok, I posted this once already, but it seems to have been lost in the abyss somewhere. I stayed on Mont St. Michel years ago at the Hotel Croix Blanche. It was a wonderful experience. Staying on the Mont is the only way to experience it without the tourists. My room was big with a great view. The food was excellent; I had some wonderful lamb. At night, I walked to the top to the cemetary where the monks are buried. I would definitely recommend staying on Mont St. Michel; there are several hotels to choose from. Don't let the previous poster discourage you.
