Hotel in Naples for two nights

We (husband and wife) will travel by train from Venice to Naples in early May, spend two nights in Naples (visiting Pompei), then train to Salerno and ferry to probably Amalfi.

Can anyone recommend a hotel in Naples convenient to the train station, for about 125 to 160 euro a night.

How long should we allow for Pompei, given that we are not archeological junkies. How to travel from Naples to Pompei?

I think even non archaeological junkies would want to allow at least three and preferably four hours to Pompeii. Anything less would be truly cursory.

Getting to Pompeii from Naples is straightforward. You take the Circumvesuviana -- a light rail, commuter line -- and get off at Pompeii Scavi. The entrance is just across the street. The Circumvesuviana station is connected with the Naples train station. It's well signed but I think is at a lower level.

Can't help with the hotel. Do a general search -- a number of people have recommended reasonably priced hotels. You might want to avoid the station area. Like most such districts it's a tad sketchy.

Make sure you visit the archaeological museum to view the murals, statues and mosaics recovered from Pompeii.

Haven't been there yet, so can't tell you anything from experience, Peter, but after reading so much about avoiding the train station area, I reserved a few nights at:

http://www.chiaiahotel.com/napoli/en/

It looks to be an easy walk from the bus stops near Molo Beverello and Pza. Plebiscito (sp?. Also gets good reviews on TA.

The area right around the train station is very sketchy indeed.
We stayed at the Hotel Piazza Bellini which was a short cab ride from the station, but is 56 euro more than your budget.

It was a very nice hotel right in the centro storico, great pizza places nearby and a very short walk to the Archaelogical museum which was fantastic, most of the treasures from Pompeii are in there. We spent most of a day there, with a break to a nearby restaurant for lunch.

While in Naples we did a walking tour with a local guide and knowing we were leaving the next day for the Amalfi coast she implored us NOT to walk to the train station but to take a cab instead. Be vigilant in and around that train station.

We spent several hours at Pompeii and didn't see it all, it is vast.

The budget hotel in which I stayed when I visited Naples in 2007 was clean and well-located, but small and had minimal amenities. It still seems to get decent reviews, though, so you might give it a look:

I agree that you should allot at least 4 hours for Pompeii. Be sure to leave time for the Villa dei Misteri, which I thought best seen at the end of one's visit.

Will you have any time to visit Salerno itself? I'm a fan. It's lungomare is lovely and its cathedral has some very special features (just to mention two of its most wonderful features).

Hi, I live in Naples and it's true that the area of the station is a bit bad but this evening! In the morning it is very populated and so no problem.
I recommend the hotel terminus which is right outside the station at Piazza Garibaldi. It is not very expensive and is well cared for.
Good trip in Napoles
P.s. near the station there is a pizzeria da Michele , the most famous pizzeria in Naples.
Do not forget to eat his pizza, is the good of the city.

To travelgirl87- Michele's pizza is great, but have you tried Tuttino's pizza on Via Sopramuro? It is the best in this world. Besides, I'm American, and live in Maryland. Tuttino's owner loves Americans, and treats them royally. I go to Napoli a couple of times a year, and know the city well. I have stories that even Napolitanos cannot match.

Thanks.

KJA, Hotel Europeo is inexpensive indeed - a look at January dates lists a single room with ensuite bathroom for 24 Euros per night! Is this a typical price, or is Italy getting cheaper?

@WillTravel - When I was there in May 2006, a single with en suite was 50 euro per night -- I just checked.

For clarity, I should have said ... I just checked my notes for the trip, which included my reservation information. In case you (or anyone else who reads this post) consider the Hotel Europeo, let me clearly state that it is a budget hotel that will NOT meet all travelers' needs. If you are traveling on a budget, give it a look -- but do your research to decide whether it will meet YOUR needs!

Sher, sorry, just seeing this now.

Yes, her name is Marina de Martino. Her site is www.napolinostressitinerari.com

She was fantastic, spent hours with us and took us into places we would have just walked past not knowing what was there. It was one of the best days on our trip.

She has a tremendous passion for her city Naples, and a lot of knowledge to share.

raincitygirl: What did Marina charge, and for how long a tour? I don't see any rates on her website.

Holly, as best I can remember it was 20 euro per hour. It seemed very inexpensive to me. I do remember we gave her extra money because she really gave us a great day, we were with her for at least five hours, maybe more.

As well as walking us all over the Centro Storico she drove us in her car to some nicer parts of Napoli where we could see the lovely views. She described this as taking us from the Hell to the Heaven. She is a very passionate, funny woman, a real character. Her husband is an architect at City Hall, so she had some funny remarks to make about that.

Her mother owns a jewellery store on Ischia and Marina is also a gemologist. I was interested in buying a cameo so she took me to the wholesale place where her mother buys some of her stock. I purchased a stunning cameo there and have had it valued at more than I paid for it.

By the way, she did not mention any of this to me, I asked her about buying some jewellery because I had read about her in an online article. (just in case you would think she is pushing the jewellery thing, she isn't)

There aren't any rates on her website, I emailed her and enquired when I was organizing our trip.
