I've no idea what Geoffrey's talking about... Slovenia's a brilliant country and totally safe for women. I stayed at the youth hostel when I was there - which was a bit basic, but about $10 a night! However, there are several hotels in the centre - the Slon (which is run by Best Western), Austrotel and the Holiday Inn all look fine and are very central. I don't know about places to stay outside Ljubljana, but the town of Piran near the Italian border might be worth trying as it's very beautiful

HI
we visited Lublanja several years ago and had a wondeful time. It's a very nice city and easy for walking. We stayed at the Holiday Inn, which was centrally located and had a parking garage that we required. It was a bit pricey, but at that time it was a good hotel. Just as another writer said before don't miss Piran, very Italian yet in Slovenia. It was part of Italy until the 20th cent. So much for history.
Enjoy alan

For Julia, I departed Slovenia the day before your posting. In Ljubljana, I stayed at Grand Union. Wonderful place! Room rate for our group was around $75 US.( Individual rates are probably higher). The meals we took in hotel were excellent, service was top notch. Wines were superb! Many of the ladies in our group stated they could "live" in their bathroom, it was so nice. I had to agree. Grand Union was one of the many highlights of a thoroughly enjoyable visit to Slovenia.

I just booked at the Grand Union for August of next year. The going rate is now 155 Euro for a double, but well worth it as I understand. Prices include full breakfast, tax, and service.
They have a web site at www.gh-union.si
There is both a new building and an old building (I believe the new one was built as a Holiday Inn). Although rates are the same we were strongly advised to choose the old building which is lovingly restored.

I just put two and two together and came up with four. . .amazing how that works. I'm assuming the Holiday Inn that Alan suggests is the building that the Grand Union took over as their second part. That's why Susan doesn't remember seeing the Holiday Inn.
