My wife and I will be in Germany over Thanksgiving and are flying in and out of Frankfurt. We are trying to decide where to stay for our final night -- preferably near the airport. Since we will only be going there to crash before the flight out the next morning, we definitely don't need anything fancy. Do any of you have recommendations? Thanks in advance.

I flew back from Frankfurt yesterday, the night brfore staying at National Hotel (by the suggestion of other fodorites)in front of Frankfurt train station. I got a good deal (about $50 per night including good breakfast) from Expedia.com.

The hotel is all right, public area a bit faded, free internet at the lobby, but room( and bathroom )are brigth and clean.

From Frankfurt train station S#8 and S#9 (Euro 3.40) goes to airpport every 10-15 minutes, takes less than 15 minutes.

10 days abo, I stayed at Hotel Konigshof by Mainz train station, it was O.K.(just functional) and convenient also. From Mainz train station, frequent S trains takes about 30 minutes to airport.

Your requirement for "near the airport" might give you quite a bit of leeway. Wiesbaden, a charming small city, is only a 30 minute S-Bahn ride away from FRA, and is quite do-able even for one night's stay. In fact, that's how I handled a quandary similar to yours last Spring.

In Wiesbaden, I can recommend the Hotel Drei Lilien, in the center of town, an easy walk from several dining opportunities, as well as from the Karl-Friedrichsbad Therme. For me, a session in the Therme was the perfect 'cap' to a wonderful 2-week stay in Germany.

The staff at the Hotel Drei Lilien (actually a B&B) were most accomodating of my need to get to FRA for an early flight, even preparing a very lovely breakfast for me earlier than would normally be done.

I've stayed at the Frankfurt Marriott numerous times before a flight out. I either use my Marriott reward points, or win a bid on Priceline. (usually around $60-70)

The Marriott lacks a certain charm, but the beds are great, as are the views from the hotel. The main train station is close by, where it is an easy trip to the airport by train. (I've also taken a taxi, but they are expensive and are burdened by traffic snarls. Good luck.

I stayed in July at Holiday Inn Airport. There is a free shuttle from airport (it is also a railway station at airport) to the hotel. It is 10 min. far from airport.
The cost is (or was) incredible low - 33 $ per night, breakfast not included. Buffet breakfast you can pay for it ~ 15 $.

Padgett, Just returned from Germany where we stayed at the Sheraton.

This hotel is right at the airport. (Very convienent, all you do is walk through the tunnel) This was the second time I have stayed here and its becoming one of my favorite hotels. I like it because:

After two weeks in Germany, it eases me back into an American way of life. The hotel is very american.

The rooms are adequate size and I know what I am getting.

The restaurant menu offers american food which I am no ready for. The breakfast buffet is superb...lost of choices including eggs and bacon, french toast, pancakes. As you can imagine I am ready for this type of food.

The room rate is decent E195. This last time we did not have a reservation because we didn't expect to stay another night in Germany. Due to delayed connections we had to reschedule our flight for the next day.
The desk staff quoted us a rate which I thought was high compared to the previous year. She recommended we go to the Business center, get on the internet and see if we could get the room at a cheaper rate.

I took her adive and saved E30.

Everyone speaks English so I don't have to struggle with my poor German.

Hotel Tanne, in Kelsterbach, is minutes from the Frankfurt terminal. A small, clean, family run hotel. They have wake up calls for early flights, and will arrange a cab for you, even very early in the morning. cab fare is about 5 euro.

I am another fan of the Marriott in the airport. I always found that after days of traveling it was nice to be able to walk through the tunnel the next morning and check in at the terminal. No need to walk outside or deal with train schedules or taxis. However, as stated in a prior post, it is not an inexpensive hotel.

I think you meant to say Sheraton instead of Marriott. I like the Sheraton's location, but not their rates.

Sorry, you are right I did mean the Sheraton. The rates are high, but last time in Europe, after arriving from Sicily via Rome and losing luggage, we stayed at a Marriott. It was supposedly near the airport and had shuttle service. After the flight and long wait for (no show) luggage and 4 calls for the shuttle, we took a taxi to a Marriott (not around the corner) quite late at night and no eating establishments in the near area and the hotel restaurant closed.Thank goodness the bar was open!

We've stayed in the Frankfurt airport Novotel a few times and it has been comfortable, with a decent (if unremarkable) on-site restaurant and free shuttle to the airport. We've usually been able to get reasonable rates, around the 100 euro mark. BUT it's undergoing renovation from mid-November to early January. I don't know if it will be open during that time period or whether they plan to shut down completely during the work. However, if it is open, you would probably be able to get excellent rates and since you will only be there in the evening and leaving early the next morning, you won't be bothered by renovation noise.

We have done the Sheraton at the airport and it works fine.

On our last few trips we have opted to stay in Heidelberg to enjoy one last night in a scenic town versus an airport hotel. If you have a car Heidelberg is an easy 45 minute drive to the airport...especially on weekend departures. It beats the airport bland.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Moerfelden which is an easy 5-minute drive from the Frankfurt Airport. The internet rate was 78E for a double room, including a good buffet breakfast, which I'm sure varies depending on the time of year. The hotel also offers shuttle service to/from the airport for around 5E, but it should be booked as soon as you arrive. If you have a car, parking is 8E.

We were quite pleased with the room and amenities of the hotel. There is a good Italian Restaurant right across the road -- the hotel can give you more info. We had a very good meal there on our last night in Germany.

My wife and I flew into Frankfurt last Sept. We wanted to stay not too far from the airport, spend the night and then head to Garmisch via Rothenburg and Dinkelsbuhl. We found a little town (walled with towers) named Eibelstadt, just south of Wurzburg. We walked around for an hour enjoying the sights. We stayed at a great hotel (Zum Ross) on the town square. The owner speaks english and the rates were under 49 Euro. He served excellent local wine and some fantastic dinner meals. Some local gentlemen sat nearby playing cards and having a good time. Breakfast also is included. We stayed there the night before we flew out of Frankfurt. They were having a wine fest in the square which must have went well, as we watched the locals leave in various stages of intoxication! About an 1 hours drive away and 10 minutes from the autobahn. It just seemed the perfect place to spend at least the first day and last day in Germany. These are my favorite kind places to visit.

check out the schlosshotel kronberg, LHW.COM, a very short easy drive to the airport, and a truly unforgetable experience staying in a castle, with a brunch you would not believe, and some very quaint restaurants just down the street, a great way to spend a last night. staying at a airport hotel i THINK NOT!!!
