My husband, teens and I will be in Paris early in July. He has to be in meetings at the Palais de Congres. Others we are traveling with have booked the Marriott Champs Elysee, at 600 Euro for a double that's more than we want to spend. A travel agent suggested the Hotel Montfleuri with a "discounted" rate of 230 euros a night per room. She says it is fabulous, but the photos and the reviews have me very concerned. Any suggestions? What would work for his business, our tourism and still allow us to be close to the other part of our group?

Many options at good prices for you here. Lancaster usually for me there great with a Michelin restaurnat. Going in April we want to be a little more central closer to the Louvre at good price points so for us then www.intercontinental.com Le Grand from 300 euro.

The Champs Elysées is about the most sterile place in Paris. Your teens will be bored stiff. It's just a big wide street with huge American chain stores on it. Find a hotel in a part of Paris (4th, 5th, 6th) where your kids will actually have some fun and get to be part of the "scene" that is Paris. 600 euro a night is outrageous. There are innumerable wonderful hotels in charming parts of Paris to be had for a third or less than that. Search this site and you'll get recommendations for hundreds. It's so easy to use public transportation in Paris that proximity to the Palais de Congrès should be the least of your concerns.

Most of the stores on the Champs-Elysees are not American chain stores, hardly any are. Some are French and Spanish chain stores, but it is a shopping street, sure (and some airlines and car dealers).

If you want to be near the others, the Lancaster is a nice hotel, I agree. That seems an awfully high rate for the Marriott, I'm surprised.

The Warwick is a nice hotel near there and its rooms are only around 400 a night. http://www.warwickparis.com/

YOu don't say what you big concern is about the Montfleuri, it is hardly a dump. If it is simply that you don't like modern decor, you should say that so people know what to suggest. Although its location near Argentine metro may not be so convenient for you, anyway, in various ways. A lot of Paris hotels have gotten into that look lately.

Some hotels cheaper than the Marriott in that general area are the Hotel California, and the Chateau Frontenac http://www.hfrontenac.com/ (very moderate price and good location off the main streets)

YOu can just go to booking.com and find tons, specify arrondisement 8 and your budget.

Thanks for the responses. I actually love modern decor. The reviews I read about the Montfleuri were so very mixed and the pictures made it look dark and dingy. For, 460 Euros a night (two rooms) I thought we could find something better. My main concern is that it be very clean and rather attractive. I don't want to dread going back to my hotel.

To be safe, and for the same price as two roms in the Montfleur, I have temporarily held a family room in the Renaissance Parc De Triomphe. However, I'm concerned that we'll step out onto a very commercial, less than safe area when we leave the hotel.

We are not really into shopping. However, we love great places to eat, cafe's, museums and just walking to absorb a city. Perhaps I should look into places in the 4th, 5th and 6th. I just don't want the commute to be too long for my husband. Is there a particular metro line we should be on?

I am so pleasantly surprised at the great hotels and links suggested here and their rates! I will continue to explore. Any other thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I've stayed at the Hotel California as referenced by Christina above. It's about 2 blocks off of the Champs Elysées and it's far enough away to be nice and quiet. It's a perfectly fine hotel plus it's close to a metro stop. Nice, clean, not really anything remarkable pros or cons. I believe they have family rooms and 2 room suites.

Sharona, Cristina and Qwovadis thanks for all the suggestions -- all of them seem very good. I am now concerned about stepping out on to totally commercial streets. I think I have fallen in love with the very impractical, selfish idea of having my husband commute so that we can enjoy neighborhood with great cafes etc. Michale_Paris. I LOVE the Lutece and the Notre Dame. But, both are already booked.

Do any of you have other similar suggestions? Just to confirm the 8th arrond and the area around the Montfleuri -- Etoile(?) is much more business-like and does not have the character of the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th. Correct?

It's an upmarket residential area around Etoile, very green and calm. It's not a bad area at all, although it lacks the action and character of the other districts you mention. I wouldn't rule out this location as it is convenient to both business at Palais de Congres and sightseeing. Hotel Belfast is a great hotel at the Arc.

Thank you for your suggestions nikt34. I look forward to exploring them. So, you wouldn't rule out Etoile? Possible to find sweet little cafes and such nearby? My biggest concern is about it being overly commercial.

In terms of transportation, Etoile is fine. In terms of atmosphere, I think you can do better.

The Concorde Lafayette is on top of the Palais des Congrès and the Méridien is across the street from it.

We have stayed several times in the Hotel Madison just off the Blvd St. Germain in the 6th and liked it very much. Another one to look at is the Aubusson, althought the price point might be a little higher.

My family is rebelling. I suppose it might be because I have become unhealthily obsessed with looking up hotels, (I love so many of these suggestions) double checking reviews, figuring out metro routes between them and the Palais de Congre, looking at street views, checking availability -- etc. I am concerned because so many hotels are already booked ( I thought July was slow).

Anyway, they want me to just stop and stick with the Renaissance Arc de Triomphe. They are baffled my my reluctance because of the great reviews on Booking.com and Tripadvisor, the convenience and the Marriott points we can use for two of our nights. They ease my concerns about the soul-less quality of the area by assuring me that we will spend our days exploring St. Germain , the Iles and the Marais and only stumble into the Renaissance to sleep. Should I just give it up? I still have to book our flights and plan for the India and Munich part of the trip. Can someone make me feel better about the Renaissance?
