hotel air conditioning in Italy

hotel air conditioning in Italy
We will be traveling in Italy (Rome, Venice, Florence) beginning May 20. I have heard that hotels are not allowed to turn on their air conditining until June. Is this true?
(I am concerned becasue i have asthma, and i have contacted our hotels in Rome and Venice --both Hiltons. They both said the hotel is air conditioned, but avoided answering whether we could actually turn it on in the room from May 20 on.) Does anyone know how i can find out for sure?

Each hotel is different. We were in Tuscany three years ago and all hotels had air conditioning, but some of them did not turn them on until later in the season.
We just returned from two weeks in Rome, Capri, and Amalfi. Of the five hotels I stayed in, all offered air conditioning that was available, and this was in mid-April. I used the air conditioning in all five hotels.
I suggest you press them on whether or not the air will be available during the time you'll be there. You are more likely to have access to air conditioning in an American style hotel.

Many hotels have central air that can;t be controlled from the room - and they give you as much as they think people need. It;s true you'll do better in American chains than in european hotels on the whole as far s AC is concerned.

We stayed in hotels in Venice, Milan and Rome in May one year and all had controls in the room for the AC and all the rooms allowed us to sleep in as cool of a temp as was comfortable. Even though the hotel in Venice was a very old bldg, the AC was fine.
It must vary by hotel, but we have always been fortunate and had in room controls in every hotel where we have stayed in Europe---and these were all moderate hotels, not luxury properties. Check the websites for places you are considering and see if they offer the info.

If you ask a hotel about AC, do not ask if it can be turned on and off in the room. Ask if you can control the temperature in your room. Big difference. They control the temperature and as nytraveler said, it's only as cold as THEY think you need.

Ask again, by email, and get them to commit in writing to what is available. We got stuck in Holiday Inn at CDG in October that had turned off the a/c and had on the heat, but it was not cold outside. The room was WAY too hot and we couldn't even open a window. Sealed shut. We complained and they absolutely lied and said they'd be up with a key to turn the a/c on. Didn't happen.
In Venice they had no a/c whatsoever and the first room had no opening windows. It did have a fan. We asked to be moved and they gave us a room with functioning windows but we knew we had made them mad.
Maybe you'll have better luck in May. Our trips are usually March and October.

We stayed at Hotel Roma in Florence, Italy last week-April 2011. Hotel information site said it has air conditioner but it didn't explain that it can't be turn on from November to May. The Hotel told us they can't turn on their central air conditioner because the Florence government authority don't give them permission to turn them on until May 2011. Ha. The reason being the increase in air pollution. They told us the temperature was cold outside, so no need for A/C. But with windows close it is not that cold inside the room. So we decided to open the window of the hotel at night to sleep. Now, second problem. Since Hotel is near the train station, you will hear all night noises from people getting in/out of the train station-(remember that window is open due to no air conditioner) making this very difficult to sleep. Additionally, construction-repairs were being done in front of Hotel so heavy noise after 7:00a.m. Now, I don't mind all this, but if hotel will NOT have A/C available they should explained this in their site-so you can decide if you want to go to this type of hotel or not. So check BEFORE booking-ask: Is there an A/C? Can it be turn on while I am there? Can I control the temperature of my room? Be sure you got a "yes" i all of them.
